Latest Toronto shootout underlines need for tougher gun law: Premier
10 Jun, 2:55 PM
TORONTO (CP) - The brazen daylight gun fight in a residential Toronto neighbourhood that left a 19-year-old dead Saturday underlines the need for tougher gun laws and a provincial review of how to fight urban gun violence, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Sunday.
In light of the tragic Saturday shooting and having spoken to the mother of Jordan Manners - the teenager who was shot and killed in the hallway of his Toronto school - McGuinty said he would like to see a provincial review of what's being done to fight gun violence
"That would take into account what we've all done, what's working, where could we still do more and how do we ensure that - here in Ontario - we don't become captive to an apparently inexorable trend in the U.S. in terms of the development of crime in large urban centres," McGuinty said before participating in the annual Portuguese Parade in Toronto.
"How do we avoid that?"
One way, McGuinty suggested, would be for Ottawa to bring in tougher gun laws that would ban handguns in Ontario and other provinces.
"We have an important opportunity at this period of our history to have a decidedly different gun culture here in Canada than we do south of the border," McGuinty added.
"We've got to renew our efforts to ensure we have in place all the measures on both sides of the ledger - we've got to be tough on crime as well as tough on the causes of crime."
Canada's largest city has been rocked gun violence recently with the death of 17-year-old Manners two weeks ago and now with a gun fight that erupted in broad daylight while children enjoyed the Saturday sunshine in their northwest Toronto neighbourhood.
Police are still looking for a late-model silver Mercedes-Benz sport utility vehicle carrying a person who opened fire on a car at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
The vehicles raced alongside each other on John Garland Blvd. for about three-quarters of a kilometre as shots rang out, until the car came to a stop, police said.
"A shooting in the middle of the day - its scary," said Supt. Ron Taverner. "It's a total disregard for people . . . it's lucky no one walking on the street was injured."
Paramedics found Jose Hierro-Saez, 19, dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. Three other men in the vehicle were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds: one suffered a wound to the chest, one was hit in the abdomen, and the other suffered a leg wound.
Police identified the wounded men as Paddy McFrinn, 18, Moustaffa Omar, 20, and Matthew Dale, 18. Police say they do not yet have a suspect in custody.

This is something that has been dragged through the mud before but it is still a hot button issue.xsbank wrote:One person per day is killed in traffic deaths in BC. I say BAN THE AUTOMOBILE!!
Please lets not do this gun thread thing again - there's pages of it here somewhere - its all been said already.
Car accidents happen all the time, but they are mostly ACCIDENTS how do we curb deliberate gun deaths? We arent looking for a solution for someone who Cheneys their hunting problem, we are looking for a way to solve the problem of people willingly shooting eachother in the street.
Theres no quick and easy solution but what would the gun nuts do? How would they stop the gun violence in the cities?

I think the problem is drugs & gangs, rather than guns. After those two are deal with, then you can move to gun control.

I agree, that is what MOST of these problems probably stem from; and guess what there is a VERY easy solution, albeit something that will piss a lot of people off…Golden Flyer wrote:I think the problem is drugs & gangs, rather than guns. Legalize all drugs, and license a crown corporation to produce them, add taxes to the total final sale price, that money then goes towards treatment and anti drug adds etc… You will overnight put many thousands of dealers, traffickers, etc out of work. I mean honestly in organized crime Id hazard a bet drugs make the entire backbone of the industry, even if an organization concentrated more on arms trafficking with no more revenue from drugs even the market for hot firearms will dry up. Top it off with institutionally legalized prostitution and presto chango society will have just had a MAJOR restructuring…
I have never figured out why our government isn't interested in taxing drugs.
For that matter, why doesn't the gov't tax all sex acts? I mean who would complain about paying a couple bucks (think toll road) right before their gf changed their windshield washer fluid? Compared to what you spend on dinner, a movie, etc.

Eleven people dead. Where is the outcry to ban trains?

As has been said, if you want to stop these shootings, stop the gangs and drug trade. Legalizing drugs is probably the best way to undercut the criminal gangs and organized crime, but it's also the least likely solution to happen.

At this point, I dont think legalizing these drugs will be an option. Washington will always fight to block it, and Ottawa will succumb.

You buy only local merchandise and don't drink anything water based?Hedley wrote:Yup. Rivers and trains have no useful purpose for me. They never do anything useful. But they kill, so we should ban them.
Don't get me wrong, I do not support the registry, but this whole "other things kill why don't we ban them also" thing is ridiculous. For example, cars are made for driving, guns for killing. Killing prey, killing people, killing bad guys, but still killing. Guns are a weapon and weapons have a main purpose completely different than all the other things we can name that also kill.

I say Ban 50 Cent and all those tough and rough gangsta music bullshit ...
It makes me wonder why those teenage kids walking down the street with hats to the side of their heads and baggi pants think they so tough,...
I had one threatening me and talking some Jamaican slangs(he was white) to me the other day ,He was with his girl too, I got off the car to see what his problem was but he started to run !!!
I think we should cure the base, we need an educational system reform...

On any given day there are enough weapons of all types sitting in large sea-going, trailer-like containers on the docks of Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax that they could equip a small army. It would be nice if the Federal government would release the true statistics as to how many of the illegal weapons in Canada start their use when they are stolen from containers on the docks of those three cities, but alas they won't. They won't because it then becomes THEIR problam alone as to how to cure it, but if they state that most illegal weapons in Canada are coming across the US/Canadian border, then they deflect the source of that problem over onto foreign soil.
You and xsbank have little, if anything, to contribute to what needs to be a reasonable and mutually productive debate in this country with nonsense like that. If you really want to help out, learn how to frame an argument meant to convince rather than just push buttons.Hedley wrote:Yup. Rivers and trains have no useful purpose for me. Did I get the rhetoric right? Or should I say left?
I'm not really sure how effective that will be. For example, cigarettes are "controlled" by the government but because of the high taxes, there is a booming smuggling industry. I had the opportunity to witness some of that during a stay in Cornwall at the height of the smuggling back in the early 90's. There were car bombs, homes being burned and automatic weapons fire on the St. Lawrence. The coast guard reportedly would not go out on the river after dark. Certainly, the tracer rounds made for a pretty light show during the nights.Walker wrote:Legalize all drugs, and license a crown corporation to produce them, add taxes to the total final sale price, that money then goes towards treatment and anti drug adds etc… You will overnight put many thousands of dealers, traffickers, etc out of work.
Still, maybe it's an option that should be considered...
