Questions

Post by flyinphil »

A buddy of mine recently quit WS citing the upgrade time was projected at 6-8 years.

I am hearing recent opinions of 2 years.

Anyone have a handle on this?

Is a YYZ port realistic yet or would one have to position to YYC?

although I would love a 2 year upgrade, the fact of the matter is that we r looking at closer to 6-7 years....still better than what Jazz would have been..

At the end of the day, who really cares how much time there is to upgrade? Though it does play some importance, the fact is 3rd year FO's are T4ing often over 100G. So, lets say the average age of a new hire is 33, and assuming 7 years to upgrade (could be less, or a little more), that person would still have a solid 20 years to sit in the left seat (or prehaps by that time even 25 years, should they wanna stick around that long). In the short term, I guess it's a big deal, but in the long run it isn't so bad. But maybe that opinion comes from the fact that I'm just in groundschool, and right now I care more about becoming a good FO than thinking about being a Captain.

Good points shankdown but some people shape the average from the high end. What if you were 45 and had a wife and kids to support?

Then things change a little.

Worst case don't contribute to the ESP, first/second year and work some overtime to help make ends meet if it's that tight. My take home is $1130
every 2 weeks before perdiums. But, I am also not in the ESP (yet). I have also heard of guys making 10-20K in overtime a year if they work hard. I would think that would still beat being attached to a pager 20 somthing days a month.
But it comes down to what you want in life, and whats important to you.

you're throwing away thousands of dollars by not doing the full 20% ESP, but I'm sure you've heard that multiple times already. It's even worth going into debt, then pay off when the shares mature in a year. I'm selling shares every quarter, and I have a nice nest egg with the RSP shares as well.

Wait a minute $1130 take home before perdiems, how much every two weeks are your perdiems, because $1130 /2weeks doesn't even come close to 80K/yr.

Ahh ok.

I've been wondering in general how are guys/gals managing their income? Do you all find your co-workers all have a solid plan since there is no company pension?

Obviously with that sort of income you could build a very nice nest egg in a relatively short amount of time.
