Jazz bases upon seletion

Post by gig »

I was just wondering how it worked for base selection with jazz. Lets imagine you are wishing a YUL CRJ posting, and your only choices are YUL Dash or YYZ CRJ.

Is it possible to take the YYZ CRJ and switch base to YUL eventually, what is the usual waiting time?

I guess taking the Dash would be a wrong choice as they are not willing to retrain on another type?

Thanks for your help

Well, it all a crapshoot. What is more important to you, Flying a jet or living in your city. If you take the Dash, you are on it for 2 years. period. If you pick the jet out of YYZ, you can get YUL in six months or sooner, sometimes it may take longer, it all depends on availability. Remenber there are no freezes for bases, just aircraft.

If you reallly want the jet, you can also commute to YYZ until you get back the YUL base. There is a flight every hour, and you get passes from day one now.

Who knows,YUL CRJ may be available when you start.

Bonne chance

Here is what you can expect for the next few Jazz groundschools:

4 YUL DH8
12 YYZ DH8
5 YYC CRJ
1 YYC DH8
6 YVR CRJ
1 YVR DH8

This is the bare minimum spots that need to be filled.

I'm surprised at the YVR RJ spots. Won't the July bid fill a lot of those?

I don't get the obsession with the RJ unless your goal is to get jet time so you can jump ship to Westjet.
Take the base you want, if your plan is to stay put, you'll fly the RJ eventually. If you ever get a captain spot on the Dash you'll have some time on it and won't look like a knob.

Another thing to consider before choosing aircraft over base. Commuting is expensive, plan $200 a month for a crash pad and $25 for round trip YYZ to YUL. That's another $150 a month. Plan for another $200 easy in additional meal expenses since you'll be away from home more. Expect to be away from home at least 20 days a month as opposed to 15 or less at your own base.
You get the same pay on either plane.
I'm not a commuter so feel free to correct my numbers but this is what I've observed.

Just keep in mind those positions from the bid might be filled internally first. Then whatever is left will be offered at the groundschools. (The Jazz bid is out BTW if anyone cares)

Also on top of that there are 29 Capt positions opening up as well, meaning those will generate some more FO positions at various bases.

Basically as it stands there will 58 planned newhires in total, We won't rerally know the equip. and bases until the position award is out next month.

Cheers

There is a cost to commuting but I think you are a bit off. It's only $4.95 one way to fly YYZ-YUL. If you plan it right in terms of pairings and check-ins you may not need a crash pad at all. As for the cost of food, not sure how you came up with it but bring your own from home to offset the cost.

YYZ to YUL is $4.95. Have you checked the other direction. It'll set you back over $20.

It's on the second or third day of groundschool after seniority numbers are drawn.
If you draw the last seniority number you get whats leftover.
