TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran on Monday launched a new wave of a moral crackdown against women who "dress like models" and men whose hairstyles are deemed unIslamic, police said.
Tehran's police force dispatched dozens of police cars and minibuses into the early evening rush-hour to enforce the dress rules at major squares in the city centre, an AFP correspondent said.
The new "plan to increase security in society" -- which is limited to Tehran but will later extend nationwide -- comes after a pre-summer drive by the police resulted in thousands of warnings and hundreds of arrests.
"We have vowed to continue the campaign to reinforce the plan to increase security in society with new personnel who have received the necessary training," the Tehran police head of information Mehdi Ahmadi told reporters as the first police forces were dispatched.
"This notably includes the use of 100 female police officers," he added.
He said that the campaign would target women who were badly veiled, wore overly tight overcoats, sported excessively short trousers and were "dressed like models."
"As far as men are concerned we will act against those who have Western-style haircuts and clothing. We are also going to act against clothes shops and hairdressers."
Ahmadi said the policy will be first to give a verbal warning to those who infringe the law and, if necessary, they will then be arrested and taken for "consultation."
"Normally the problem is resolved here. If not, and these cases are often those of re-offenders, the case is sent to the judiciary," Ahmadi said.
An AFP correspondent in Vanak Square in central Tehran saw women being apprehended and then being escorted towards a waiting minibus by female police officers. They then waited in the bus as the operation continued.
Other women were seen quickly adjusting their headscarves to cover loose hair when they saw the officers.
Women in Iran are obliged to cover all bodily contours and their heads, but in recent years many have pushed the boundaries by showing off bare ankles and fashionably styled hair beneath their headscarves.
Although the April crackdown was the severest such drive in years, some women are still donning figure-hugging coats and skimpy headscarves. The wacky hairdos favoured by some young men in Tehran are also much in evidence.
By renewing the drive, it appears the police want to send a message that they are serious about enforcing the dress rules.
Many conservatives have applauded the crackdown as important to protect the security of society, but moderates have publicly questioned whether Iran would be better off tackling poverty and crime rather than slack dressing.
Ahmad Reza Radan, the head of Tehran's police, emphasised that the plan was not just restricted to enforcing Islamic dress rules but also targeted all those who disrupt "security" in society.
"In this plan, sexual harassment in the street, addicts and hooligans and the security of recreational places will be targeted," he told the ISNA news agency.
He added that the police would also step up the fight against what he described as "sexually deviant groups and Satan-worshipping cults."
"Some young people, intentionally or unwittingly, are walking advertisements for Western deviant sexual and Satan-worshipping cults. In this plan such people will be identified and confronted.

Cat Religion in Red Dwarf
A civilization of cat-people rose and fell on Red Dwarf in the 3,000,000 years between its leaving Earth and the time the radiation reached a low enough level that Lister could safely be let out of stasis. Like most civilizations, this one had its own religion and the episode Waiting for God gives quite a strong message on religion in general. Just stuff to think about.
The supreme deity in their religion is Cloister. Legend has it that Cloister was frozen in time to save Frankenstein, the Holy Mother of the cat-people. He would eventually return and lead the cat-people to Fushal (I always thought it was spelled Fyushal in Infinity Welcomes Careful Drivers but resiak (user) swears it's Fushal in the Official Programme Guide, so I use this latter spelling), the Promised Land. After arriving at Fushal, the cats will be able to partake of all manner of hotdog and donut and they would wear hats of great majesty, though they be made of colored cardboard and have humorous arrows through the top. At least, that's what legend says. This is actually their interpretation of Lister's plan to open a hotdog and donut diner stand on Fiji, but three million years of retelling the tale warped the names and events beyond recognition.
Most of the cats on Red Dwarf died in Holy Wars fought between the two factions -- those who thought the hats should be red and those who thought the hats should be blue. Daft, especially since, according to Lister, they were supposed to be green. The cats not killed in Holy Wars built two arks, one for red-hats and one for blue-hats, and they left Red Dwarf in search of Fushal. They used a star chart Cloister supposedly left for Frankenstein. The sacred writings read "Seven socks. One shirt." Unfortunately, Lister had lined Frankenstein's basket with his laundry list. So one ark crashed into a comet, and the other flew onward forever.
Lister was most disturbed, though, when he learned they actually made things up about him. He was supposed to have given them Five Sacred Laws (not quite the Pentabarf but just as loony), one of which is "It is a sin to be cool." Of these five, Lister claimed to have broken four of them, and would have broken the fifth but there are no sheep on board.

Any civilian who goes forth into any combat zone unarmed anywhere on this planet can expect and deserve anything that happens to them. Most folks might not like that statement nor care for that attitude, but that's what is called the plain old "reality of war". The fact of the matter is that in that combat zone the winner is the one standing up and the looser is the one laying down and the weapons don't give a shit how that happened.
Although I admire the ideals of the the Koreans and feel sorry for them, I would not personally endanger my life searching for theirs if I carried a weapon and was stationed in Afghanistan. I would have enough concerns about innocent local civilians being caught in gunfire without having other nations importing more civilians onto the scene. Whoever sent them and allowed them into Afghanistan are 100% idiots and 100% irrespnsible.

You are right. These people are plain nuts. I came across 200 of them who came last year. They crossed from Uzbekistan, at the same time I came across the border. They dressed like clowns and they looked like mentally challenged people. In total there were about 2000. The biggest problem is that Afghanistan gave them visas. Then when they came, no one knew what to do with them.
They finally left, but this year, again a bunch came. The wandered in taliban territory...

I think that the Korean government scored very poor by allowing them to travel to Afghanistan. Now everyone is trying to fix the mess.
My belief is that the Talibans do not really want to kill them, but they need bargaining chips.
How many they will kill is the question. Talibans are trying to gain a reputation for being fair and representing true Islam. So the slaughter of a bunch of foreigners will certainly not help them.

I'm not religious zealot whatsoever, but I will state the following for all the so-called "non-believers". I've seen intense combat in the past that took place over a 2 year duration. Before some men entered combat, they would state far and wide that they didn't believe in God and that it was all bullshit of the highest grade. Many of them also had no use for niggers, spics, wops....you name it. Then the moment would come when they thought they were going to die and they were holding their guts in with their hands. At that moment ALL of them did exactly the same thing........they cried for their mothers and ALWAYS yelled, cried, moaned or just plain begged for a Padre, Chaplain or Rabbi. They didn't give a shit which one it was or whether they were black, yellow or white.........because they weren't taking ANY chances that they might have been wrong and wanted some religious person to "say a few words" as they passed to the 'other side'. They wanted as many things going for them as possible.........JUST IN CASE.
So careful what you say because you might have to 'back it up' sooner than you expect and the odds are that you won't when that moment arrives.
