Is the 748 King of the Skys?

Post by MAG1 »

Your Highness.
I'm wondering if aircraft size is directly related to pilot head size. Maybe there is some correlation between gross weight and gross arrogance. I thought the more experience you got the more wisdom you gained and you could then be a pillar of knowledge for those around you to emulate. Maybe I'm wrong. Pilots have traditionally been labeled as sometimes egotistical and I have seen it. For the most part however, pilots are capable, thoughtful and very helpful people. Especially with our peers. Like every profession you have your good ones and bad ones. I just don't think the bad ones should be tolerated. If someone's new to the area, missed your radio call or doesn't back track as fast as you, don't be a dick! You're not the King of the Skys in your little 748.

748 drivers are GODS! I thought everybody knew that? Seriously though, most of the guys I know who drive 748's are anything but egotistical! And they can all fly! Very well. I've found, that on any given day, any one of us can be having a bad day. If you don't fly a 748, at least spend a night in a Holiday Inn Express.....

748's are pretty damn cool. I'd love to fly one. Nothing like a ramp full people with their fingers in their ears.

Different airplanes, different missions. The 580 needs more runway, burns way more fuel, carries a bigger load. But I'd put a Hawker driver up against anybody as far as hands and feet skills go. If you can put a 748 into Red Sucker Lake, at night, in the rain, with a cross wind...no reverse don't forget...you can fly anything, anywhere, any time.
It's a totally different skill set than a 747-800, but I imagine, with the course, very few 748 drivers couldn't handle the 747-800. The other way around? The 747-800 drivers would have more problems.....unless, they have "bush rat" time.
Thoughts?

Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.

Wow - No reverse! I had no idea... I don't know much about the Convair either - I just like the look of both those machines...

I do miss the 748HO...

I always liked the "cleaning the shitter is just cleaning the shitter" comment he once made...

KEEP TELLING IT LIKE IT IS AND KICKIN ASS HO...

The Hawker drivers in N.W. Ontario (I assume we're talking about them, if not, understand that my comments are related only to them) are all very experienced, professional, dedicated pilots. Do they make mistakes? Yup, but less than I do. They do have a tendency to get pissy when people don't give them the space they need to operate a large, heavy airplane.
The 748s are not just another voice on the radio. They need more space and more time to do their jobs properly.
Aircraft size is not always related to head size, but it usually is related to inertia.
Managing that inertia requires a bit more leeway than they usually get.

It also requires a bit more respect.

Gooch,

Only people in my own company (and maybe my last company) think I'm an A-hole, lol.
But I agree with what Doc said, and, if it was a Yukon based 748 that pissed you off, Mag1, sorry and I owe you a beer.

Darnell

P.S. RFN hit the nail on the head.
P.P.S. mag1 where are we talking about?

I am talking NW Ontario and respect is a two way street. I've heard a few exchanges between the 748 and a 206 and another with a ho where this guy had a real attitude problem. All for an altitude check. I felt like saying 'hey buddy, he just wants your altitude, not your attitude!' It can be so busy in this area you really have to be careful. Your right RFN those planes do get more respect and people like to stay away from them. Everyone here seems to have there own idea's about how the radios should be done. You can't tie them up for long at all, but you can't be so vague and fast that no one can pick up what your saying. Since I've been here I've probably had five close calls. That's about one a month.

Hi
I don't know if your talking about FO or captain here, but you gotta understand that you've been there for 5 months and those captains are probably the pilots that have been flying IFR in this region for the longest time...many have over 10 years of flying that thing... so you gotta to be respectful to them and of course if you come to them with a cocky attitude they are gonna get pissed off with reason...

If you come to them to ask politly for some advise, I'm sure they'll be happy to help you! it's just like the old floats guys...

There are no cocky atitudes here. A 206 driver asked to confirm an atitude and the reply was "I already said 2000 feet". Nice. My FO once asked for an altitude and didn't get a reply, asked again on the other freq, nothing, then I asked twice in a row and he finally replied in a more than annoyed voice so I asked if I pissed him off and he called me a jackass and said I made too many radio calls. This is the same plane that taxed out onto a runway I was rolling down to take off of with out a call at all. I know when to make and how to make radio calls. These guys are buying the big sky theory and thats not good enough for me. There will be a midair here one day and bad atitudes and shitty radio calls sure don't help. When I ask for an altitude should I maybe say please or apologize for the inconvience. It sets a bad tone. lets just be nice here, is that so hard.

I think this all comes down to overuse of the radio . There is no need to make a radio call anymore in NW Ont cause each of the sioux heroes are broadcasting their own flight following over 2 freq every 5 minutes. Everrrr sick anywhayzz.

squawk...I seem to remember the FO saying...."Ya think we should shut it down?..." And me saying something real witty, like..."Might as well, we ain't going anywhere...."
That was an interesting day. That wasn't just the nose wheel. That was the entire nose gear assembly!
If Andy reads this, maybe he can post some pics.

I was in the air that day as well and heard the same exchange. There was a position report right after the aircraft was airborne on 26.7. When they cleared the zone another call was made on 22.8 out of respect for the old time float guys not using 26.7 as the en route freq. Your call was answered two times on the proper enroute frequency of 126.7 before you got called a jackass on 122.8.

As far as the radio work of your superior airline it does leave a lot to be desired. Try learning from the old time guys about the info needed and not repeating your registration 2 or 3 times per call. This lesson should be studied very closely by the new 206 driver especially. A simple gaze at a map once in a while will let you know what tracks are conflicting or not.
