What's your Heading??

Post by Nordo »

Ive noticed a bit of bitch-slapping and name calling in this here forum. I find it entertaining, and as a collegue pointed out in another forum topic, it passes the time between students and other meanial taskes around the office.

My question is simply this...What is it that we are trying to get out this forum anyway?? I have found that if you spend enough time sifting through the run-on sentances about how things you do are wrong and are going to kill you one day, you find that there is some useful bits of info in here. I havent been a member here for long but I know that there are some experienced pilots involved that have been in the buss. for a while and have gathered all sorts of great experience. But its funny when you see some wisdom in a thread, then righ after it you see a post from sombody who is clearly a 'Fresh 4' or just out of the nest, telling them that they are stupid and rambling on about how their spelling is incorect. Im not absolved of these transcretions and enjoy a good battle of whitt from time to time, but Im not here to banter like a little school girl. This is a great place to talk about some issues with people you would normaly never get a chance to meet from places and experiences you may never encounter, and who knows, you might even get somthing out of it (even if you already have 2000 or more hours).

Im not trying to be the forum saviour here, and I dont think anything should change, I simply wondering what others are getting out of this great site. Boost the ego? Give advice? Meet a lover??

Just curious.

Well it would be a pretty boring place around here if we just sat around and agreed with each other all the time. :D

I get a great deal of amusement out of the arguments that get going on this forum. Even more if i'm the one who started the argument.

We have some very experienced and knowledgeable members here but the greatest thing is the breadth of knowledge at our disposal. It does not matter what your question is about, there is someone here who has something intelligent to say about it. Granted for each one of those there are five who have nothing to say about it in great detail and excrutiating spelling, but it is usually the same five, which makes it easy to skip over much of the garbage.

As for spelling Nordo, i suspect that you do not walk around with a hat on sideways, a golden dog turd hanging around your neck, your mouth hanging open, and the crotch of your pants hanging down around your knees. I further suspect that you do not look like this, or some equivalent, because you do not want your appearance to portray stupidity.

If i am correct in my suspicions, consider the appearance of someone who tries to use big words and cannot spell them. Your spelling and grammer (and maybe your avatar) are the only appearance you have here.

You're right.

Anyways, going to what Nordo originally said, this forum is a lot like a bar where pilots and observers just come to hang out once in a while. Sometimes, the odd stupid bar fight breaks out and we all like to get involved.

Depending on my current requirements to keep me warm and fuzzy, I usually take this into serious consideration, selecting FL290 would force me to make a re-fueling stop along the way (not popular with management) and FL350 is pretty close to the service ceiling of the a/c.
The airspeed has to be monitored closely, as there's small margin between low and high speed buffet (About 10-20 knots). Another factor is, that as the load factor is increased, the stalling speed increases, therefore we're limited to a maximum of 5 degrees of bank!
So doc, I too, often wonder..what does a guy do with his beloved lint?????

I make all my students neglect personal hygene in order to build a good supply of the bb lint. As a survival tool, it readily ignites especially when combined with copious amounts of pit sweat.

As far as what I'd like to get out of the forum, it's a PM saying I have been selected to fly the right seat of a GV due to my candid nature, wealth of experience, and generally happy stature. Until then, I'll be happy reading about how everybody is bitching about the state of the industry and arguing about the way to land a plane in a crosswind. Oh - and I might just make a few buddies along the way. But seriously, this forum seems WAY better than it did a year or so ago...it was pretty catty then.

Keep it real, homies.

Isn't it neat when belly button lint, after you leave it in there for a long time, kinda petrifies and gets brittle, and you have to dig it out with tweezers?

Aw geez,
Just when things were getting peaceful, harmony has been restored to the peaceable Avcan kingdom, and we once again begin to enjoy a big ol' love-in (after sending Ahramin to bed early)...... Hz2P has to start in on my name...my parents were blues fans ok? they named me after the great bb king. Our last name happened to be lint. Just ask my brother Dryer.

Because spelling words incorrectly makes you way less cool than the person who points out your spelling mistakes.

Shimmydampener, i was not trying to belittle your taste in clothing, just using a stereotype for an example. Sorry if i hit too close to the mark.

By appearance i am not referring to how cool the peasants think you look, but rather whether you seem to be someone knowledgeable and capable of intelligent thought. Perhaps i should have said mien instead of appearance.

However, i do agree that pointing out spelling mistakes is a lost cause, and most likely uncharitable as well since most of you were taught English in school by ignorant abecedarians who could not write properly themselves. Perhaps those of you who get annoyed by people correcting spelling here should look closely and see how vast the repertoire of spelling mistakes here is and what minuscule proportion of them get ridiculed.

It takes some superlative ignorance to get anyone to comment on spelling mistakes here. I doubt you can find a post where i corrected someone's spelling.

Don't worry, you didn't hit anywhere close to any mark. I just wasn't sure what that portion of your post had to do with anything, or whether it was just an excuse to use big words to convince us of your intelligence.

.....that, and I was just hoping to stir the pot a bit, after all this talk of everyone getting along for once, we can't have that.........

Ahramin, Quit derailing the posts, the question here was simple: what are we getting out of this site...?

We sould report this to a moderator --uh oh--you are a moderator!
...quoted from AVCANADA FAQ:
"What are Moderators?
Moderators are individuals (or groups of individuals) whose job it is to look after the running of the forums from day to day. ......blah blah..blah .... (ed note: shortened to save space) moderators are there to prevent people going off-topic or posting abusive or offensive material."

This isn't the Spelling Bee forum, and I couldn't find anything here saying that bad spelling, typos or grammatical erors were against the "rules" of the board.

Go back to bed ..G'nite..

PS can I borrow your thesaurus? We're all out of T.P.

That moderator definition is written by the same people who wrote the scripts that drive this board. This board is not moderated. Off topic posts are not going to be removed. Abusive material is not going to be removed. The owner of this board believes, as i do, that the benefits of free speech far outweight the disadvantages. No one is suggesting that people who cannot write be forbidden from posting here.

This should be obvious.

Again. I doubt that you can find a single post where i corrected anyone's spelling.

Spelling is important how else are you going to tell an employer that you will work for free. Or better still how can you parker pen a log book and not get caught. If you have the time to look and check it's time to get a life.

My two lira on the subject.

And just to get the spellers pissed - I'm teaching in a HO for the next few months and I'm loving it. I guess I spelled it fine when I took the job.

I like this forum because it does inform and except for some of the roger ram jets who think they can bully it is entertaining. If you don't know roger ram jet your to young.
