legally blind doesn't mean blind, to be legally blind you must have either 20/200 vision OR have 70% field of vision loss, i have a friend with one dead eye therefor with 90% field of vision loss he is legally blind, he's got 20/25 in the other eye though.

That's actually quite a sad story - I fail to see the Darwinian reference and you, bmc, are an insensitive dork. Perhaps you might call your local CNIB and offer your services as a volunteer, perhaps you will realize that the blind are also people. There is a CNIB kid's camp on Bowen Island and they are always looking for help.

The PC way is to say "persons with disabilities" as opposed to "disabled persons" so as to remind everyone they are people first.

Consider this the first step in your education.

I disagree XS, even if he was not 100% blind he should have been aware of his limits, for him to get on an ATV with zero training, horrible eyesight, no helmet, and then just gun it after being warned to take it easy?

Im beggining to think that blindness wasnt his handycap.

i never had any training on an ATV when i first rode one, they aren't that hard to drive. Also i hate all this PC shite, Now they are called Differently abled instead of disabled (everyone is differently abled, i can't play the cello) Instead of Mentally Handicapped I have actually heard them called Mentally DELAYED they are not delayed, they wont get there if you give them long enough, you don't just get over brain damage.

i don't think he said anything of the like in that. He was saying that legally blind didn't mean completely blind and don't judge this guy saying "idiot was blind he shouldn't have been driving"

Ok. Forget the status of his vision for a moment. Remove that from the story. Read it as a guy gets on an ATV with no helmet, firewalls it and drives into a tree at full speed and kills himself. What would be the appropriate response? He was a nice boy?

Flooring it wasnt intelligent, neither was an amateur getting on a machine like that sans brain bucket, then he should have also known that he doesnt have full vision, he should probably take it easy.

i drive my grandfathers ATV all the time without a helmet, granted its a utility ATV and i'm not out racing it. i mean if he was gonna go offroading for a while yeah put on an f-ing helmet. if this was the case the man is not only blind but a retard aswell

its an ATV used for towing, i'm not going off roading with it. My grandfather just knows i'm not a complete f-ing moron too. wearing a helmet on that ATV is like wearing a helmet on a ride on lawnmower/ farm tractor

Well gents, I am married to a lady who is legally blind and I can attest to the urge to be 'normal' and do 'normal' activities, like drive. Perhaps that makes me too sensitive, but the worse a group of pilots will find amongst themselves for handicaps will be brain damage. So before you laugh your fool heads off, give a moment's thought to what its like to be saddled with a disability. I know a guy who crashed a 172 and is now a quadraplegic. "...there but for the grace of God..." etc. etc.

So do I still get the lecture on knowing your limits? Niss, you fell off your moped - did you know your limits? I'll bet you know them now because you survived. I guess it would have been pretty funny and a huge laugh on this site if you didn't.

The only part of this story that's interesting is that the dead person was legally blind. Do you think that any of you would give a RA about someone who did this who was normally sighted? It probably happens every day and is so mundane that the papers don't give a RA either.

About 25 people are killed on snow machines any given weekend in Canada and we don't analyse them for disabilities before trashing them. Most of them go too fast, drink too much Molson's and then find the thickest tree to centre-punch.

Once again, the tiny minds of Avcanada get all excited about something they read in the newspapers.

XS, If he wasnt blind he would be the same old idiot who took off into the woods on a machine he was unable to control, without any protective gear, and potentially liquered up.

I went on my bike with a vague idea of my limits, and a whole lot of novice-ness. However if my eyesight was in question I would never have gotten on.

Im the kind of guy who thinks if your license says you need your glasses to drive, you better have em. Getting on something like that knowing damn well that even if you took every precaution (sober as a judge, safety gear, friends showing him how to adequatley, in an open and safe area) you still had far less than perfect vision that would be a challenge but atleast they tried to plan for it.

This guy doesnt end up in Darwins book because hes blind, he ends up in his book because he should have known better. If he wanted to drive the atv, they should have gone to an open field with a helmet, and no boose, and had someone there to show him everything.

I have to agree with Niss and BMC. I understand that people with disabilities have an urge to feel normal and where ever possible we should help them to do this but they also need to realize that that they do have limits. Personally, I was born with out the part of the body that gives humans rythm so I stay the eff off the dancefloor. Definitly not as tragic as blindness but I think you see my point about acknowledging limits

I would think that this guy would be a darwin award candidate just based on the lack of helmet and the booze, the blindness is just a clincher.

dying while being blind, drunk (possibly) and riding an atv with no helmet...if that isn't natural selection at it its finest I don't know what is.
