The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Thanks everyone! Sure, I'll go for the night rating- the winter is coming :) . Then I'll see...

Why is night x-country pic so important? Besides experience, does it help in career or would it lower my insurance costs should I ever by a plane or whatever else?

I studied at Toronto Airways in Buttonville and I had exactly 100 hours before my flight test- quite a lot. On the other hand, I got a mark with which I would have passed commercial. I started more than a year ago, I was trying to fly as often as possible, sometimes 3-4 times per week, but sometimes I didn't fly for 2-3 weeks or even more at all- because of the weather and also because of a very large "students per instructor" ratio- sometimes it was really hard to book either instuctor's time or plane. I suggest you fly consistently, 2-3 times per week (1 at least), and do not stop or you'll forget some stuff and spend more hours repeating it. Good luck!

You need 100 hrs of night PIC to get your ATPL. You might not get much when you instruct. You won't get any flying floats or working the ramp. And you won't get any working as a copilot. Therefore, get as much as you can now.

"Yeah. There is a problem. You...because you're dangerous. You're dangerous and foolish - and that makes you dangerous! Now, let's cut the...crap. We've got a plane to fly. Let's try to be on time, okay?"

Actually this opens up another subject, What if you had an engine failure at night in a single engine aircraft?!!

I have been wanting to build my x-country time at night but the idea of an engine failing at night time is kind of scary (You don't have many (if any) options) and is possible..

Would love to hear from the experts on this one !!

Cheers

Look for a road (preferably with little traffic) and use it as a landing strip. That's what I was instructed to do in that case.

Turn on your landing light upon reaching 100' AGL. If you like what you see leave it on, if you don't turn it off. :shock:

(b) 100 hours night flight time as pilot-in-command or as co-pilot of which a minimum of 30 hours shall have been acquired in aeroplanes;

Still worth gettting as much night PIC as possible though.
