Whats wrong with WestJet?

Post by YYC the place to be »

What is up with westjet hiring overweight flight attendants? Flight attendants are supposed to be able to walk comfortably down the aisle. Not shimmying through and bumping people. I know that some may be offended by this topic but take a look around next time you fly with them. The person who can't bend over to pick something up off the floor is the same person who is responsible for your safety in the event of an emergency?......Sketchy......

When a flight attendant has to get down on all fours to disengage a slide then that's not being able to do your job. True story...

I think they should just be able to get through the overwing exit. I don't think I'm asking too much.

Who said women? We are talking about overweight flight attendants vs safety.

Canair are you implying that all fat flight attendants are women?

YYC made no mention of gender in his post...

So I hate to be the first cookie shooter, galley hag, trolly dolly to weigh in on the subject - pun not initially intended - but this one is really to rich not to touch.

First off, let me ask: "Are you kidding? Seriously? No, really. Seriously?"

Then let me ask: "Why do they hire fat pilots?"

Do you suspect that WestJet just hands the flight attendants a tray, pushes them out in the aisle and says: "Have at it!" ?

No. Like every other flight attendant and pilots in the commercial industry they must pass exams, both written and demonstrated, to become crew members. That even includes operating a window exit (and exiting the window at most carriers) in emergency scenarios and yes, wait for it, bending over to detach a slide!

While I can only assume you work for an operation that does not employ flight attendants, I hope that should you someday wish to, you change your outlook.

I await your answer with baited breath dollface.

Fair enough...there are enough of us fat pilots around...

But:
- pilots aren't the ones walking up and down the aisles (or having to RUN in the case of an emergency) bumping into passengers
- pilots aren't the ones huffing and puffing and sweating their butts off just to engage/disengage a slide!

I like Porter's requirements:
"...the position of flight attendants is more
dependent on a good standard of physical and mental health than the average occupation."

You know what happens when you assume  actually, I do work for an organization that employs flight attendants (it's called my wife)

I'm not trying to argue the point to be superficial, I'm arguing the point for safety's sake.

I have 11 FAs per flight and I think it could be a safety issue. I had the same discussion with FAs few weeks ago and FAs themself argue that it could be unsafe. I am not fixing a weight or size limit, but you can't deny that there is one.

Well shit if your going to be narrow minded like that, than why does air Canada employ 45-55 year old flight attendants that look like ass. There age must surely be a safety issue. Come on

What do you expect that we're going to be like Korean and make them retire at 25 and weight 90lbs.
We live in Canada, equal opportunity my friend.

Sounds like someone's been to the pub before starting this thread.

I found another place you can ask the question, if it's still bugging you after your afternoon nap:

Your homophobic attitude is not welcome here. F/A's are safety professionals - and wether they are male/female straight/gay they are all just as cabable of saving your ass. If you are a Captain and I hope your not, 10 years of CRM wont save you. Wake up and smell the coffee you ass.

My better half is an F/A for an airline and we've had countless discussions on this topic (overweight FAs) because she works with them all of the time.

What it comes down to is...

If an FA can't easily fit down the aisle (and in an emergency situation they may even have to RUN) and they have to get down on their hands and knees to arm and disarm the slides then it's not safe---regardless of the way they look or their sexual preference.

I thought I'd throw the topic out there to see what others in the industry think.

Just because they appear to be fat or unable to perform in an emergency situation doesn't mean they won't. I don't know how ours (WS) or anyone else train their FA's but I would imagine that there is an acceptable level of performance that has to be demonstrated during training, no?
