Post by Evan »

Hey, i am a student pilot, and I heard that there are height limits for major airlines, I am 6 feet 3 inches, and I am wondering if anyone knows the average height restrictions for the majors. Thanks

If you fit in a C-152 or 72, you should be all right.

The only height restriction I know of belongs to the air force. If you're too tall, you will have a problem with the F-18's ejection seat since your legs will fly along with the aircraft while you're checking out, if you ever have to. They won't take you in for that.

I never heard of anything like that with any airline. I could be wrong though.

Not politically correct anymore. I knew one pilot who had a problem getting on with Pacific Western Airlines in the '70's because he was too shory but discrimination laws prevent that and besides, modern airplanes have such a large range of adjustment on the seats and pedals that that is a thing of the past. They have eye height parallax sighting devices on the windshield and if you can line those up, your in. The only airplane you MAY have a problem in is a Lear Jet but when I flew one, We had a pilot who was 6'6" and he fit in. A bit uncomfortable but no problem.

Tango01, this friend of mine was about 5'4'' and had to be 5' 5'' minimum for Pacific Western Airlines so we tied one end to a 57 chevy and the other end to a telephone pole and drove away. But seriously, he actually went to a trained professional who actually stretched him the inch he required. After the measurement, he shrunk back but by then it did not matter. Vertically challenged people actually do have a harder time of it than the streachers. But even in the Metro, there is enough adjustment to accomodate. In the old G1, I have had people well over 6 ft and under 5' (kids) actually sit in the pilots chair (on the ground) and there was enough adjustment in the seats and rudder pedals to accomodate them.

Regardless of the height restriction, I think they don't hire short pilots. I guess tall pilots instill more confidence in passengers? Who knows. Even though you may get an interview and are fully qualified, they won't call you back. Oh well, I guess I'll go fly in China then.

I was always under the impression that size had nothing to do with it.

I've been told what counts is how good you you are at getting the job done.

i'm 6'6"... no big deal. you just have to come up with creative ways to fit your legs in and around control columns and whatnot ( ). apparently there's a guy at my airline who's 6'7". where there's a will, there's a way!
