Why only airplanes?
Yesterday I took the ferry from Nanaimo to Vancouver and the Greyhound bus down town to the office of Air Sea Lines.
I flew Harbor Air back to Nanaimo and I had to show government issued photo ID to get a boarding pass.
Two questions:
(1) Why is it only on airplanes we need photo ID and not on any other mode of transportation?
(2) Is this just the tip of the iceberg and soon we all will need travel permits to go anywhere outside of our local neighborhood?
Oh one more question, if I had not had picture ID ( government issued ) would I have been denied a boarding pass?

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

AND

Thanks for the link CD.
That answers my question.
Travel by air is becoming a very user unfriendly mode of transport.
One more question.
Do these fearless leaders of Canada really believe that any terrorist could not provide fake ID as easy as genuine ID?
And how many terrorists would be flying on these small sea planes which are nothing more than local taxis?
Makes me feel real secure...especially having been on the receiving end of their deciding I couldn't own a commercial OC in Canada.

Transport Canada for confirmation of identity and a decision about whether or not the individual will be allowed to board the flight.

Cat,
I agree. Unfortunately the government has been sucked into the hysteria. They are blindly responding to public demand. All it takes is a very vocal minority to "brainwash" their government representatives into taking knee-jerk style action.
We've seen it before, we'll see it again.

Nice to see we can agree on something again CID.
What truly concerns me is the direction that the USA has taken under their present government.
The freedoms that Americans have taken for granted are swiftly being erroded down there and we are going down the same slippery slope.
several years ago I had a very sobering experience with homeland security when they seized the airplane and my crew when I was delivering an airplane from Europe to the USA.
I never ever want to go through that again..ever.
Don't misunderstand me and think I'm paranoid. nothing could be further from the truth as I have seen most everything this planet has to experience....it is just that I'm concerned about this erosion of our freedoms in North America under the guise of hunting terrorists.

Another angle: are the people who are checking ID's even trained to do so? I worked in a small sked service a while ago, and I checked ID's. I have no idea how to spot a fake ID, or even what to look for, except for the really obvious. How hard are people really looking at them anyway?

How about this for stupid. Got a company memo today that states while deadheading on our own planes our RAIC (red pass) does not meet the requirements for the purpose of ID to get on a Canadian airline. Then WTF is it good for. It was said that it must have Gender, DOB and some other shit to meet the req's

Funny, but I was going to start a thread about security check ins.
I have observed that the airline check-in counter is supposed to check your photo ID. Fair enough, I am going to guess that is so they can surreptiously make sure you DO have it before it becomes an issue at the flight boarding gate, where they check it again. Now, I wonder just how well that is done by two people under pressure to get an overdue flight on its way. What if my wife hasn't shaved her moustache that day? Surely she will look different?
It is also obvious that people can exchange boarding passes once they are through security, leading to some interesting scenarios.
My point is, given the amount of time they have available, would it not be best to have the photo ID check done at .....wait for it.................Tataaaaaa!!! ...........SECURITY??????
It was always done that way when James and I visited "M", but of course, security then meant something.

I wonder if old Stock wears that wet suit in Parliament......

That's the government for you. Just look at how they reacted after the liquid explosive and shoe explosive threats. It's not a new idea since someone already used liquid bomb on a Philippine flight to Japan before. Just look at the situation in Israeli. Terrorists can easily get on a bus strap with explosives or a bag full of the stuff and kill scores of people. Like photo ID will do us any good if the terrorists aren't even on the list.
Every single one of the 911 hijackers was in the USA legally, in their real name and with all government permits, visas and identification in order. They weren't going to risk being tripped up by some idiot with a lousy fake ID. The only thing that would have detected these people's intent was a mind-reading machine. When they invent one, I'll be first to buy it!
When faced with a problem they cannot solve, it is human nature to do what we can, even if it has no effect whatsoever, because we can't do anything really useful. The problem here is that the public is stupid enough to believe that this is real action on the part of the government. Someone mentioned the gun registry. We've spent 2 billion dollars to make sure that loonies now have registered guns. They go off the same way as the old unregistered ones!

Don't worry about the pass thing. Won't be long now we can have RFID tags implanted so they know who you are without showing the id, this way they'll also know where you were and who you talked to. No Pic Id, no problem... Just don't piss anyone off or your tag will get restricted and you'll be building a canoe!
