Can ANYONE understand this Duty Time stuff?
Here’s a subject that’s almost as old as aviation itself, duty time limitations. There were references in the ANO’s and Air Regs (remember those?) that became the CAR’s. And now, to muddy the waters just a little bit more, we can search through the Commercial & Business Aviation Advisory Circulars as well. It’s enough to give Johnny Cochrane a skull cramp. So here’s the question..
Employed by a 704 operator, on call 24/7 for a solid two weeks. Do the regulations really allow a flight crew to be dispatched on 90 minutes notice to pull a 14 hour duty day?
It goes like this. It’s 2355, Letterman’s done his thing and off to the fart sack you go. Ahhh, so tired, just want to go to bed and get a good night slee…. BRRRRING goes the #@&^$ phone. “need you airborne at 0130 for a 14 hour marathon to Clownville and back”! All you can think is please, let this be a dream. No such luck. Life has dealt you yet another shi**y hand.
This question was asked of me recently, and not wanting to appear like I’m not the brightest light on the tree, I blurted out “that’ll be easy to find. Just gimme a few hours.” So, after trying to decipher this “crap”, I’m no further ahead than when I started.
Is there anyone out there that can enlighten me on pilot “on call” vs. pilot “on standby” vs. pilot “on reserve”. The requirement for this individual is not to be at the airport waiting, just to always be “available” for a 14 hour duty day to start at any hour of the day or night.
Don’t it just make you love getting October’s schedule via your email, in mid-August!
