Air Canada/Jazz Missed Approach in Kelowna

Post by dhc-t2 »

Anybody hear about the missed approach in Kelowna recently. Passengers reported on Global TV that the flight aborted landing at the very last minute & returned to Vancouver. The passengers reported that snow clearing equipment was on the active runway at time of attempted landing. Reporters asked the local airport authority & they said they know of no problem??", "You need to talk to Transport Canada", Transport Canada said, "You need to talk to Nav Canada". Now there are some people saying that there was indeed no equipment on the runway?? What the heck happened & why does no one seem to know exactly what happened?

Here's the cadors on the incident. It's kinda vague

Air Canada Jazz Flight JZA8424, a Bombardier CRJ1IFR Vancouver to Kelowna, on approach for Runway 16 reported 5 NM final at 0850Z. ST23 completed a runway check, exited at Taxiway Delta, and advised of Canadian Runway Friction Index (CRFI) .23 and that the runway was closed. The FSS advised JZA8424 of the closure and the CRFI. The aircraft did a missed approach and returned to Vancouver.

An aircraft does a go around because of a runway closure, and you guys post a thread about it? I understand one of Air Canada's Airbus toilets was out of order.....what?...no thread??

From which passenger seats could the passengers see equipment on the active???

"Is everyone Okay?"......Christ, Mustard....do you fly?

Does this have something to do with the mysterious
"Kelowna Triangle" that I hear about all the time?

Glad to hear everyone is ok.

The real question is how did that RFI get so low?
and can this be preventable in the future?
I have some theories but maybe its too soon...

What would you like to see prevented in the future? Missed approaches? Over shoots? What? Nothing happened!

I guess Jazz can't use the slogan "we'll get you there or die trying" . That's OK , I can think of a few other places that have probably patented that line anyway.

I had an OPs manager that gave me shit for missing once "We are professionals, we never miss!!" (windshear on a 2800ft strip down sloping runway, I went around and landed right after)

Scary part is he was the TC preferred Ops manager after the company had gotten their OC pulled.

SMS isn't a "miracle" solution but can it be any worse than the old way.

With alot of low time newly upgraded captains in the 703 world (due to all the hiring up top) I hope we don't see alot of guys pushing their limits when they don't even know where those limits are.

What's worse? A 5000hr King Air driver back in the day busting by 100' or a new upgrade 1000hr wonder fighting the machine down to minimums with crap vis, a good x-wind and a low friction index? With a 200hr co-pilot thats still trying to figure out where to start the timing on the RNAV.

Both are grey areas but if I was a PAX, I'd prefer to be with the experienced crew.

Sounds like a non-event, but it doesn't always turn out to be.

How the hell does the tv report give the same credibility to some idiot passenger as they do to YLW Airport Operations? Painful. Oh well, he's flown that flight a lot so I guess he's an expert.
