Christmas depression.

Post by Driving Rain »

I don't know if any other AV Canada readers get depressed at this time of year. I know a couple of my friends do. One of them told me it got so bad for him this year he thought about suicide. Turns out he called a suicide prevention hot line that turned out to be a call centre in Pakistan. When he told them he was suicidal they got real excited and asked if he could drive a truck.
Merry Christmas everyone

If the Christmas season doesnt make you suicidal, trying to communicate your emotions with a Pakistani call centre would. I called Bell Expressvu last week to get help with a set up problem on my system, the centre was in Pakistan as well. I honestly did not understand most of the conversation...

Regarding seasonal mood disorders, it is quite common to be more stressed, suicidal, depressed, emotional at this time of year. I think that the combination of lowered exposure to sunlight and the increased financial stresses of the season affect people more than what is commonly thought. Our society preaches that one must be merry and festive at this time of year, promoting purchases of goods to help create this atmosphere. Unfortunately, people in the both the northern US and Canada are already feeling the affects of lowered sunlight exposure which directly affects the hypothalamus and the secretion of different neurotransmitters including serotonin. Serotonin plays a major role in normal everday functions including mood, agression, appetite, etc. If one is already at a reduced capacity for normal function, than the stress of the holidays does not help! I personally am affected by the seasonal shifts of light, I therefore try to stay very active in activities that promote outdoor exposure. I enjoy walking, cross country skiing, and this year, snowshoeing. I also play squash quite regularily with some good buddies, and I am getting into swimming. Activity is key to getting through the slump.

Cheers

I vote for sex as a means to battle depression.
Studies are showing that arousal and an active sex life may lead to a longer life, better heart health, an improved ability to ward off pain, a more robust immune system and even protection against certain cancers, not to mention lower rates of depression.

Maybe not, according to the study linked above:
A much smaller study of elderly men found that those who masturbated appeared to experience less depression than those who did not.

I highlight the text to quote, then hit the button. I've tried spacing and still nothing! grrrr

Did they mention how they got past the arthritis? My dad won't stop bitching about his thumbs. I figure it is a cascade effect since lately, he has been depressed.
No idea. When I quote your quote it quotes just fine.

When I ask handgela how she feels, she always says empty and abused.
My girlfiend Palmela Handerson says the same thing to me. Go figure

Ya gotta love the AV Canada forums. Nowhere on the world wide web could you find a thread that starts with a joke about depression and suicide and then morfs into a thread about the merits of masterbation.
We are truly blessed.
