fastest MIFR

Hi guys, I might be looking at doing my MIFR soon and needing to be done in a hurry. Is anybody currently doing their MIFR out west and making really speedy progress. I'll probably have to plan on 4 to 5 weeks to get it done and am most interested in BC or Manitoba although I'd consider Alberta as well.

I'd recommend Perimeter in YWG or perhaps one of the schools at Springbank in YYC. Then you can be almost guaranteed flyable wx. ProIFR in ZBB has a great program, but you can't always plan on the wx on the coast being good enough to fly training IFR at this time of the year. JMHO

I second PRO IFR. However, like north shore said, ICING, ICING, ICING. This year seems to be a degree or cooler than normal..Which is has led to a whole bunch of cancelled flights.. * This is not Pro's Fault* Look at your weather.. If you decide Van. is a better option ..go with PRO.

Getting your MIFR in 4 weeks can be done but you will have to be prepared to work hard. You should start with all of the studying for the written done and know all the theory for the basic IFR procedures cold. At the end of every training day you should be reviewing all the knowledge items you were weak on, and grab every bit of sim you can get. How long (and how expensive) the rating takes is really up to you.

Do you already work for someone that is going to PPC you on a twin? If so, consider the cheaper alternative of getting a VFR multi rating and a group 3 (single engine) IFR rating. Then once you get the PPC you'll get bumped up to a Group 1. Could save you a bit of $$

I did my Mulfi IFR in about 5 weeks. Although, I did the C-310 ground school when I was getting my Diploma so if u want to include that maybe a little bit longer. The biggest thing is the money to pay for the nearly $400/hr flights. Other than that just a good work ethic and consistancy is the key in finishing as soon as possible.

Fly Right...

If you want:
- to understand and be able to fly in IFR the day you get your IFR rating
- to be trained BEYOND Air Canada/West Jet standards
- an instructor who has over 10000 hours flying
- a reputation in and around Calgary (almost everyone knows Dorris)
Then that's your place!

However,

If you want:
- to finish somewhere around the 40 hours of instrument time
- /fall apart under pressure
- are NOT 100% on the ball 100% of the time
- /believe that you'll learn at least some IFR while sitting in the right seat
This is NOT the place for you.

To put it into perspective, guys WITH IFR ratings who fly for a living and have 100's or even 1000's of hours IFR still wash out from Fly Right. She'll put you through so much pressure, you'll either;
1. quit flying completely
2. go somewhere else
3. have one hand scratching your ass while the other is holding a coffee in IFR Icing. Once you go through her training life becomes... simple.

So it looks like FlyRight is where I'll go. I'd thought I'd go with Perimeter until today. I had talked to somebody there a week or two ago and they said it was looking ok for availability but as of this morning it would be a two week wait to even start and they are crazy busy. Everything is all way to last minute for my liking but i need this rating ASAP. On the plus side I got confirmation today that I will be getting my skill development funding though the government. I'm doing my initial at Perimeter right now. They have a lot of students right now but they're all going into the planes. So the sims, where you start, should will free. Looks like I'll have this done in a month.

Really good school, and theres lots of experience working there right now. Get the INRAT done before you go anywhere, and read the instrument procedures manual (note that a lot of the air reg stuff is outdated).

Go to cornwall for a MIFR, If WX is good you can be done within 2 weeks of arrival. and its good training and if your on the ball it can be done for about 6000 dollars after groceries

So after two weeks at Fly Right I've done the ME rating and about 5 hours in the sim. Everything is going well at this stage and I pretty much book whenever I want and have been out at the airport 6 days a week. I'm hoping to be done with the MIFR in the next two and a half weeks or so.

I second Cornwall. I've been to Perimeter and their 45 minute run ups costing you $150 each get old in a hurry, partly because they are boring but mainly because the majority of it has nothing to do with IFR. I renewed a multi ifr in Cornwall arriving at 4pm one day and leaving at 3pm the next day.

Cornwall is the place to go especially for a renewal. They don't mess around, one check ride, then the ride. If you do well the guy figures that if you're flying IFR regularly (ie PCC only on a machine) then you probably know what you're doing and if you're not flying IFR at all then whoever hires you will be training you on the machine before sending you loose. That being said he won't close his eyes to mistakes either. Arrived 7am...back on 401 by 1pm cost $1100.00. On top of that they are a great bunch of people.
