Gimli Glider 767-200 retired to Mojave desert
The infamous Gimli Glider departed Montreal this morning to be stored in California having been finally retired from active service from Air Canada.

I think they should have flown it back into Gimli, chopped the engines on final (just for fun) and made it into a tourist attraction. With a hotdog stand of course.
Re: Gimli Glider 767-200 retired to Mojave desert
Yup! Saw her this mourning doing a gear up low pass over 06L....She was a fine aicraft!
Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.

JEESus I must be getting old - I remember that like it was yesterday (I was there shortly thereafter). Already retiring 67's eh. Well that one did have some "rash" on her belly....

Here's the flyby at Dorval:

Am I the only who finds that airliner retirements have an emotional component to them? To think of the stories that some of these airplanes could tell, especially one with 604's history...

Its kinda sad
& yea I also think that it realy should be put somewhere for pubic viewing...EVERYONE knows about the Gimli Glider....Its Air Canada's most famous aircraft....though not sure they want to remind people that they ran out of gas on one of their aircraft lol
STILL it would be nice if it was made into a museum of some sort

Well I hope they give it to the museum guys...would be a shame for it to be lost"Four groups … have shown some interest in acquiring the airplane, either for flying test beds for engines or for museum purposes, so it may not stay there too long," Pearson said.

I still say the WCAM should get it, but...where the heck would they put it? The pad between apron 4 and 5 at YWG is plenty big enough, but I'm not sure what else it's being used for at the moment (runups happen there, for one).
Beer cans should definitely NOT be in her future.

Havn't been there in a while but few years ago it was used at night & on the weekends by UPS. That being said I also agree that They should get itcywg_sw4 wrote:I still say the WCAM should get it, but...where the heck would they put it? Got to follow "Gimli Glider 400" part of the way while enroute to LAX from YYZ on thursday. After a few radio transmissions, we discovered that the original glider pilots were on board (but not operating), maybe just in case.
Re: Gimli Glider 767-200 retired to Mojave desert
UPS has been on ramp 7A for a while now. Maintenance uses it at Perimeter for runups though. Other than that, I haven't seen a whole lot of activity there recently, so who knows...Justwannafly wrote:Havn't been there in a while but few years ago it was used at night & on the weekends by UPS. I think one of these airliner "graveyards" would make a great motorcycle tour destination. Anybody?
Re: Gimli Glider 767-200 retired to Mojave desert
anyone have any info as to how many hours and cycles she has?
Why wouldn't AC part her out for the rest of the fleet? Was this the oldest one?

Man Transport Canada better not see those pictures or videos.
According to there last safety newsletter that would have been an airshow maneuver, and is threating flying ins all over Canada.
Will be getting newsletters from COPA now on buzz jobs.

The rest of the crew was too, as guests (from my understanding)Smitty wrote:Got to follow "Gimli Glider 400" part of the way while enroute to LAX from YYZ on thursday. Maybe they had a permit from TC for the buzz job?Man Transport Canada better not see those pictures or videos.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Gimli Glider 767-200 retired to Mojave desert
It flew right over the transport Canada bulding which located under 06R at YUL. Many of them transport guys noticed it.Man Transport Canada better not see those pictures or videos.
How do you I know this? Because I was in the licensing office on the second floor & I saw the gimli glider fly right next to building gear up, from the window!
The building has many windows & has a nice view of the runway. Many inspectors who take their smoke break in front of the building would have for sure seen it! 06R at yul is the worst place to do something crazy, since the TC building is right in fron of it. Somebody is always watching!
CARS 603.02 says that you cannot conduct a special aviation event without a special flight certificate.that would have been an airshow maneuver
CAR 101 defines a special aviation event as an airshow, low level air race, aerobatic competition, fly-in or balloon festival.
I don't think that little demonstration was an air show?
Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.
Re: Gimli Glider 767-200 retired to Mojave desert
ringworm, thanks - any idea why she wouldnt have been parted out is this the highest cycle 67 in th fleet?
Re: Gimli Glider 767-200 retired to Mojave desert
They did the same thing when the first B77W was delivered along with the L10. They also did it when the new colors were unveiled a few years back. So I'm guessing they had permission.THEICEMAN wrote:It flew right over the transport Canada bulding which located under 06R at YUL.
