I don't think Clive wants you to follow the SouthWest model that closely

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT---AIRPORT CLOSED
They always drag their heels clearing 12/30. I guess they figure having 25/07 open is good enough because that's the one the big boys use. I bet they wished they cleared it now.
Is tbay the smallest runway Westjet operates out of?

ok...the fact that runway 12/30 is not open really bothers me.....why would they not maintain it? ....Budget cuts?? Numerous planes have had to divert because of this...including a Canadian North 737 and an air Bravo MediVac

Because YQT is one backwards town. They have killed every other business in that town buy themselves. I guess its the airports turn.AEROMONKEY wrote:..why would they not maintain it? ....Budget cuts??

Maybe all the money went to the iris scanners and finger print checkers that don't work.
Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
That's what you get with an airport that doesn't charge an airport improvement fee!
Just kidding... Afterall, it could be YYZ...
It's been a few years since I worked there, but as I recall the snow and ice control plan used to give priority to 07/25, taxiways B, A and the length of 12/30 between taxiway A and 07/25. Next came Aprons I & II, then the other taxiways and 12/30 full length. 12/30 didn't receive priority due to the general prevailing winds and its shorter length. How long is it taking now to get to it?

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
From what i understand...YQT is one of the few airports that doesn't charge an airport improvement fee.....so if there's a lack of money to keep both runways open why do they not start chargin again?
Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
The captain and FO are a bit shook up, but everyone else is fine...........

I'm a bit chilly but doing fine otherwise. Thank you for your concern.
Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
Kinda wondered why it was sitting at the end of the runway for so long. Now I know why....

Not a good week for WestJet.
When I landed in CYWG this Wednesday evening, one of their 737 had to do an enroute precautionary engine shut down and diverted to CYWG...

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
So they shut down the other runway to "deal" with the Westjet incident eh? Why did the NOTAM say 12/30 was closed due snow? Sounds like someone isn't telling the whole truth.Westjet plane slides into snow bank at airport

No one was injured and no one was in danger Friday afternoon when a Westjet aircraft got stuck in the snow on the side of a runway at Thunder Bay International Airport after attempting a U-turn.
The mishap caused several other flights to be delayed and left about 100 passengers and crew stranded on the plane for over an hour.
The incident happened sometime after 3 p.m. on a B-737 flight which had just arrived from Toronto. Airport manager Scott McFadden says the aircraft was attempting a slow speed U-turn on its way to the gate when it hit some ice on the edge of a runway that caused it to slide and become stuck in a snow bank.
Airport officials were forced to shut down the other runways while the problem was dealt with. Emergency crews could be seen digging the nose wheel out of the snow and were planning to tow the plane backwards so that it could continue on its way to the terminal.
McFadden says because of the low speeds involved, no one was injured and no one was in any real danger.
A Westjet spokesperson says it's too soon to tell whether the plane suffered any damage or if it would be able to continue with its next flight.
Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
So AEROMONKEY....they landed long and went off the runway did they. You must be a writer for some big newpaper, with assumptions such as the ones you made above. Remember to always exagerate the story to make it sound better than it really is. Reading the article above, your story seems way out in left field!

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
You guys are going to think I'm a jinx,
After witnessing the mishaps in yrl recently, I was once again @ the hold short line when the West jet 737 landed and went off the runway. It occured as the airport manager described, during the turn around @ the end of the runway. (actually, just west of the 25/07 / 30/12 intersection, on the north side of the runway). I taxied back to the apron and put in for the day. Who was it who said these things happen in 3's? I guess I'm done for the year already!

For future reference, can you post your schedule for us all, so we can avoid wherever it is you'll be.tractor driver wrote:You guys are going to think I'm a jinx,

No kidding..........
on the other hand, If it's all done with the "threesome", maybe I'll bring some safety for a while.
Cheers!

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
Sooo.... how close were they to the end / edge of the runway that the nosewheel went off? Wether it was an overrun on landing or not, you have to be very close to the edge to start with. However VERY happy to hear no bruises or broken bones and that the old bird (new bird, I guess) will be off the ground again.

Remember tomorrow it could be you.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
It's winter. DUH. WTF is the bloody big deal? It happens. The crew probably felt like a curling stone. I've been there. Had a Twin Otter actually blown off a taxiway in BUF many years ago. Sometimes there's not much you can do, but go for the ride.
I watched a 747-400 slide sideways for about four thousand feet at JFK one winter night. The Captain came on the radio and said..."Usually you have to pay extra for a ride like that...."

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
I once had a copilot get our Buffalo 90 degrees sideways for the last few hundred feet of rollout (slideout
) at Broughton Island.
It was slick, with a crosswind and he did okay on approach and touch down, until he took out the cross controls and went to the nosewheel steering way to early.
I probably would have caught it with a young guy, but this one had a lot more hours than me, was about 15 years older, and outranked me. However, he had just come off 3 years at a desk job. (I think they call that the "halo" effect.)
We stopped sideways in the middle of the runway...he bought a few rounds later in FB.

Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
Then again. if it were icy enough, it just may have happened to you? Big tail. Big wind. Weather cock. Cross controls only work to a point...then they become decorations.
Re: Westjet off Runway in YQT
They didn't shut down the engine.
