Have you used up all of your PIC under supervision?

How did you get into a dash 8 FO spot without some PIC time?

Again.. tow banners, offer to do fam flights, drop divers, help out the cadets etc etc. Or you could go down to the states and buy some block time for cheap.

Get a PIC job, or get your PIC time up to 150 hours total then do 100 hours of PIC undersupervision.

I personally would not want to be a 3000 hours FO before I got an upgrade, but I guess if the job is good and where you want to be, have at'er

Good luck

Heres the story, I finished my CPL MULTI IFR, right after 9/11.. At that time the only job i could get was on as a FO DHC8 in asia. Didnt have 7K to spend on my CFI. Towing jobs were not available.

Now im due for an upgrade but no ATPL. My company is willing to give me a month or 2 leave, so I can get the remaining 135hours of PIC time to get the ATPL then upgrade me.

Its becoming a nightmare. Just want to get the damn ATPL.

Can anyone suggest a few names of banner towers, glider towers ect in Canada where i could build the time.

dash8,

ya might have to bite the bullet and take their offer to go away for those two months. Quite honestly since were coming up on the spring when numerous sightseeing and skydive operators will be looking for the season, now more than ever would be the best time to take that on.

I know how you feel. At 350hours, I myself was lucky to get on with a commuter outfit whose smallest aircraft was a bandit. After several years and 3500hours of total time as an F/O on a 1900, I found myself in this hole where I could not continue to progress within until I had the A's, and they had no equipment to help me get it. I then left for another company who had promised to allow me a few summer months to find my way. Just before I had taken my 3 months leave, this company went out of business...go figure.

Ultimately I was able to use my 1900 time and PPC to get on with a 1900 company that had both PIC under supervision and a couple of cessna caravans. It took a while but I've been a 1900 skipper ever since.

What I'm trying to say here is that there is a solution to your dilemma, but it will likely not be an easy one. Ya may have to take a whole summer somewhere else. Ya may have to give up your upgrade for now, and dare I say, ya may have to consider moving to another company who can give ya what ya need.

Just stick with it and it'll come. All the best and good luck!

50 hours in glider .... really rough...

50 one hour flights = 50 tows @ $30/tow = $1500 in Tows
100 1/2 hour flights = 100 tows @ $30/tow = $3000 in Tows
+
$800 Unlimited Aircraft Time
+
$400 Membership

Total = $2700-$4200

Minus the value of towing for an additional 50 hours

Pawnee rental rate ($375/hr ... taken from Aerial Application course $15 000 for 40hrs)
$375 x 50 hours = $18 750 in training value

Thus you gain $14 550 - $16 050 in free flying, and a free glider license.

Again.. tow banners
Don't! That is one of the most exhausting jobs ever....... Just for a couple hours of PIC, you have to set up the banner, then fold it after flight.
It might sound easy to you, but imagine folding a 350X50FT banner when the wind is 15KT & the temperature is -14C.
Then after that, you have to fit all the equipment in the back of a super cub. For 2hrs of flying, your gonna have to do at least one hour of set up work. Winter condition don't help either.

Flying the dam thing in windy conditions is not easy. Only doing it because I am a low timer getting those PIC hours...avoid if you can!

I will never forget YQB in early december flying the Hippodrome banner. -14C, 150/15G20, turbo prop & jet aircraft blowing the baner all over the place! The most difficult experience of my life by far!

Not sure where you are located now, but there are some navajo gigs in vancouver that would get you some time fast, but i don't think they would like it if you got the training and took off.

How did you land a Dash job in Asia? Passport, licenses?
