International student... bush flying ...

Post by Zagarino »

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to ask a general question about " International students" and bush flying...

I got a friend that is almost done with his CPL MIFR, great aviator ...i testify to that.
He asked me if i can ask around and see what are his chances of getting a job up north if he gets a work permit... he is a hard worker and willing to hit the road anytime for a good flying job up north....

What are the chances ? .... What does he need ? .... Where does he start ... and is it worth it ?

Also how do the "Operators" look at it ?? ....

Thanks in advance :)

Zag,

Well supply is low and demand is high for people with experience. If your friend has no float experience, then there's usually still a good chance for a dock/ramp job. If you get lucky, you build 50 hours in a 180 or something. There's still lots of guys in Canada that are doing this right now...so you're competing against them for a dock/ramp/entry flying job. If your looking for a right seat job in a Navajo or something, then i don't really know what you need to get started (ie.minimum times), but I think you would probably have a better chance at that then on floats. I would hazard a guess that 300-500 hours TT and a current MIFR could get you into the most basic entry level IFR job in Northern Ontario. But of course, the more W's you put up on the board, the better chance you have of winning the game.

Okay , so from what i understand is... it does not really matter if he is a foreigner or not ... as long as he can grab a float rating and a couple of hours, and get a work permit .. he is set ?

As long as he is licenced to fly here and has the right to work here, I doubt that anyone cares where he's from.

I would like to think that there would be no work permit forthcoming until all the Canadian boys and girls are working. And we all know that will never happen because there are too many Canadians looking for that same job.
