Take a look at some of the Olympus durables. My wive uses them when she mountain climbs (it's been up Baker and Kilimanjaro) and sailing. Doesn't want to haul her digital SLR up the mountain but still wants to take publishable pictures. The quality is good and it is remarkably durable and lightweight.
The current version of her camera is the Stylus SW line.

Thanks Mode C, just wanted a little more info about those VR stabilization systems.

In regards to Sony, i am one of the people who had bad experiences with it, maybe i didn't hold the camera right ?
Different opinions with different people, it also has differs from product to product. Different lenses and different technologies in each.

Olympus i heard is great too, family member owns one, 5mp but great pics. I will have to check these out. Reading lots of different reviews about them too.

However i do own a Pentax right now, its an Optio 550, great camera, just lacking the new technologies. Pentax is good too. Haven't tried any of the new products from them though. I feel like pentax is fading away in the digital world ...

Canon and Nikon are great products, superior in the industry...they are the grand-daddies of the industry i must agree..

I had a canon SD450 that survived three summers in the bush.. being dropped, shook, rattled, left in my flight suit or on the floor of a beaver and it still worked flawlessly and took awesome pictures.

I replaced it this summer after some moron let go of a boat and it smashed the screen, with the SD1000. Even better! I have nothing but great things to say about it. It's seen temps from +35 to -40 with amazing battery life and it takes pretty impressive video as well. I tried A couple of Fuji and kodak products.. but wasn't all that impressed. Canon SD is where it's at for point and shoot durability, reliability and just general awesomeness :)

Canon !!! The "CHDK hack" scripting and features make Canon stand out way above the others. Its safe and it really opens up your Canon to amazing possibilities. Output RAW if your camera model does no support it, Unlimited depth of field in macro, battery indicator always on, Timelapse movies, Zoom Bracketing, Lightning photography, and some very interesting user scripts you can use or make for your needs. Some features model dependent. Check to see which model currently supported. Enjoy!!!!

Just wanted to mention I just upgraded my D70s to a D300 and is it ever sweet. ISO range fro 100 up to 6400. And not to bad noise wise at those higher levels. The live view feature is also pretty incredible. Now I have to decide if I want to sell my D70s or keep it as a spare. I'm leaning toward selling it as it will probably just sit around and collect dust.

I thought about the D3 but as all my lenses are DX lenses there isn't enough of a difference in the two cameras for me. Although if I made helicopter money I'd probably be all over the D3 :-)

Yes, ISO 26,000 and something....

But the impressive part is, the clarity up to about ISO 6400.

These were taken hand held at ISO 1000... My old Canon 1D Mk II just couldn't do this:

If you blow up the full versions, the guy in the first photo specifically, you can clearly see individual whiskers... pretty amazing.

Ya these new nikons are insane. I'm normally one to believe the camera doesn't make the photographer but it's damn hard to take a bad picture with these things.

Apparently that's an "add on...." I thought about it for some of the commercial stuff I'm doing now, but can't really justify the extra stuff in my head. If there's a client who wants it, sure, but it's not something I'm overly keen on for what I do.

Does the D300 have that capability?

Apparently it does. And you can just by an adapter cable so you can use any existing garmin GPS instead of buying the more expensive Nikon unit. I'm also thinking about getting the wifi transmitter for controlling time lapse photographs using Nikon's Camera Control Pro 2.

I'm just using Adobe Lightroom for most of my processing at the moment - LOVE IT, and then Photoshop if there's any real heavy stuff that needs to be done. Works well for me.

The GPS is a neat feature, but not one I see myself using much.

Do you have the Active D-Lighting on the D300? Also, the Vivid setting, or Vivid +1 is a great map for the Nikon. Makes colours really pop.

Yep the 300 has both of those. I haven't quite got too deep into it just yet. Actually I'm about to hit Wascana Park to go play around with it. Really I think the only thing missing from the D3 is the extra CF slot and the sensor is a full 35mm sensor on the D3 as opposed to the DX sensor on the D300. What glass are you running around with?

Right now I own the 24-70mm F2.8 and the 70-200mm F2.8 VR, both very, very nice and super clear. I also rent the 14-24 F2.8 when I go out on a job, just gives me that wider angle to work with. This is with the 14-24mm:

I have the 14-24 as well. That's what I was just using in the park today. I also have the 105mm VR and a 70-300. I also have the kit lens that came with my D70 I think it's 55-70. But I rarely use it. The 14-24 is probably my favorite lens since I mainly shoot landscapes.

Beautiful shots, STL. I got a Nikon D40 around Christmastime, and I must admit, I'm itching already to upgrade to a D80... if only for night shooting and astrophotography - the lack of a status display on the top that doesn't blind you at night is starting to get to me.

Nice shots Guido!

What lenses do you have for your D40? Do you do a lot of Bulb Exposure shots of the stars? I haven't tried those yet, but am looking forward to playing around this winter when I don't have to be up all night.... You have ay good moon shots? They're still eluding me, got few that are OK, but nothing I'd rave about.

It'd be interesting to see what the high ISO levels will let you get with aurora. Exposures of more than a second tend cause all of the fine detail to wash out.
