When is this airplane event this year?
Is it really worth it to travel 14 hours for the weekend to go check it out or is it overrated In your opinion.
I've never been but would like o take the trip this year for something to do, But I wouldnt want to waste my time if it is not all that it's cracked up to be due to the fact that I would have to travel many a hours in order to go see it.
Thanks alot

Re: Oshkosh
i wouldn't just go for something to do. i've read a lot about this event and would really like to plan on a week there. so much to learn there... so much to see. it is more about the passion of flight and getting together with people who think the same.
go to the airventure site and do some reading on it. watch the videos and if you still need to ask, then it's probably not for you.

Re: Oshkosh
I spent a week there just looking and I still didn't see everything.
Rent a 172 or something and fly in. It is quite the experience!

Re: Oshkosh
Oshkosh is not at all overrated. I went in 2006 commercial to Chicago, rented a car and stayed in Oshkosh (got a last minute reservation at a nearby hotel). For 2008 I have already got a reservation for hotel and car at Appleton (30 km north) and expect to fly my plane there for a few days. If you are into aviation there is not a bigger event you can attend.

This year will be my 10th OSH. First was in 1998, only missed 2006. And still haven't seen it all. Definitely MUST see at least once.

Re: Oshkosh
Im looking at flying in. But affording a week's worth of hotels (at I'd imagine about 90 bucks a night) is going to be hard, and given that I dont drive... thats another challenge. Are there any accommodations within walking distance?
Re: Oshkosh
Everyone should fly a small airplane into
OSH for the convention, at least once
in their life. If you like airplanes, that is.
There are NO rental accomodations the
week of the convention. Here's what you
do:
1) fly a high-wing airplane (172, etc).
2) get a blue tarp from Cdn Tire.
3) after you land, put the blue tarp
over one wing, and tie the ends down
with spikes. Put your tent under that.
The tarp will keep the water off your
tent, and the tent will keep the mosquitoes
out.
Shower in the "red building" in the morning.
Or if you're smart, in the evening when it
isn't as busy.
Bring comfortable shoes, a hat, and sunscreen.
Keep your eyes open inbound. Keep
your mouth shut and your ears open.
Read the NOTAM.
If you don't know how to put up
a tent, here's a tip for ya:
Bring a sleeping bag. Go to the University
Dorm in the evening - you can get an ok
meal there. You can't get a dorm room,
so bunk out in a community room.

Re: Oshkosh
You might look at flying in to Fond du Lac and staying at Marion College. ( $65.00 per night and a few breakfast)I did this the year before last and it was nice to have an airconditioned room, big screen TV , kitchen, beer in the frig, etc. The guys that stayed on site got rained on and apparently the showers were so crowded they ended up washing 3 sets of nuts before they got to their own.

All part of the Oshkosh "experience"The guys that stayed on site got rained on and apparently the showers were so crowded they ended up washing 3 sets of nuts before they got to their own
Did I ever tell you about the time I accused Paul Poberezny
of stealing a truck?
Re: Oshkosh
went twice, never found the showers to be a problem but allways used them in the evening, very clean site, toilets and showers included. It did rain every day I have beeen there. I would sugest a camper if possible, or at least a cot to keep you of the ground.
I have been to floridas sun +fun and it has never rained. its also, for me anyway, is a much better time of year to go.

Re: Oshkosh
I went in 2005 and it was one of the best aviation experiences I have ever been a part of. I live in BC so it is hard for me to get out there, but I plan to fly-in in 2009 if I can. If you can spend a whole week there. If you go for a weekend you will miss 90% of everything.
Cheers,
Chris

Re: Oshkosh
So, I'm hitching a ride/flight down with my old flight school this year (arriving on the 24th....I think), so I'm just wondering if its really as insane coming in as I've been led to believe. ie: 1/2mile behind a 337, with a Bonanza v35 1/2 mile behind your 150.
Re: Oshkosh
I was going to fly there this summer but cant justify it with the way avgas prices are going. A lot of fun though, been there 3 times in the past.
It will be interesting to see if the number of aircraft will be down this year with the US economy in the dumps and fuel prices soaring. Its crazy to see Grumman Albatross, Skyraiders, vintage jets, DC-3s etc etc as peoples personal toys there!
