Just our of curiosity...

How many of you guys have actually encountered a bear out there in the bush in a situation where you did/ would have/ were thinking about giving it a hail of lead?
A couple of years ago I walked up on 2 grizzlies hanging around a tailings pond on a short walk between the airstrip and a mine. This summer we were watched by a Grizzly at less than 200yards while we unloaded at an airstrip he wasn't afraid of the plane or the trucks. In either situations a gun would have been nice.

I encountered this guy a couple of years ago in the NWT. he was well away from us but never the less still impressive!

OTH...if you need a scope to shoot the bear with....it ain't much of a threat. A real "bear gun" is for close in work. Whacking them at 200 yards doesn't really count.

Hey Doc a grizzly can cover 200 yards PDQ! and cardiovascular is something not usually in my vocabulary  in both occations a gun was not needed but could have been handy if things went different. I did fail to mention that in the encounter at the mine they were less then 10ft away and just as startled as I was never let your guard down in bear country! I have at least 2-3 bear encounters every summer and just being aware of bears and what attracts them and how to act around them is far better in preventing an attack then a gun would be however if all else fails it could be really handy!

They are indeed fast. But they would have lost interest by the time they'd gone that distance. Plus, they wouldn't likely leave the cubs that far behind. I doubt they'd even consider you a threat at that distance.

This is not very relative, but (sorta) funny.

Who's 1911 is it, how old, and how much? Trigger job? Ramp work? Sights? Not sure if I want a .45, but I am looking at a .40 Kimber 1911, but it's a few too many $$$$.

If you are in the market for 1911 style, you might want to take a look at this.

Don’t ask about the price but this is supposed to be one nice piece of hardware, and it’s made in Canada.

Para supplies hand guns to several police forces and some military world wide. I don't think you can buy one in Canada though. They are indeed a high quality piece. Many use them with much success in IPSC competition.

Thing seem to be loosening up as of late it seems. Went down to Le Baron the other day and was within a hairs breath of purchasing a Benelli pump with a plastic pistol grip stock. For the longest time I didn’t think you could even bring these things into Canada.

No problems with the pistol stock....it's the barrel length that counts. You don't want one though. Way better off with a normal stock and short barrel. You won't be able to chock the chicken for a week after ejaculating a full house magnum with a pistol grip stock!

Looproll....the best buy in that group is the CZ85! They are a wonderful piece. Very much the same feel as a Browning Hi Power. And, the Super Blackhawks. I love them SA six shooters! They make very good "bear" guns, BTW.

ha, I was looking at a CZ85. Ambidextrous controls are nice for a southpaw like me (though i'm used to using non ambi firearms)

If I ever do run into a Teddy, I will be shaking rather badly and excreting bodily fluids at an alarming rate that the first 4 shots will be all over the map, but I just might get him with the last 3 mind you. How’s that for logic?

The best machine is one strapped to your hip. If its in the airplane, or 100 feet away, even a bazooka is no good. The .45 ACP is a little lite on the hitting power though. I had a guy offer to custom make me a 5 shooter for my .450 Marlins, but my arms probably aren't big enough for that!

I'd say the best would be a Taurus Raging Bull chambered in .454 Casull, the recoil isn't too bad with the ported 8 3/8" barrel plus you can practice with .45 long colt which has extremely light recoil for its size. And if you wanna go really excessive then just grab a Siaga 12 automatic 12 gauge shotgun based on the Kalashnikov frame and action

I agree. It can happen fast! Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMbnmLLn ... re=related
Imagine the surprise if the cubs were in the bushes too.

I don't know how you guys cope with the whole ATT thing as pilots. I move around all the time, and sometimes I just pack everything up and go for a drive at the end of a season. That sounds like a lot of red tape to put up with. I'd still like to get a wilderness atc anyway, because it seems to be a "use it or lose it" sort of thing ie. if they're not issuing any it will be harder to get. I'd like a sw629 for that in .44 mag (You know that gun: Do you feel lucky?). I'd also like a .45 for IDPA-type stuff, 1911's are great but I want something with a DA/SA action and a decocker, like a SIG P220 or SW4506. If it's a 1911, I see some really nice kimbers and paras all over the place. I don't see the big deal about everyone using 9mm and .40, the .45 is a pussycat. One of those tokarev's might be in the cards too, they're cheap and the ammo is dirrrt cheap. Should be more fun for practice than a .22. It's like the SKS of the handgun world.

Right now the "bear gun" is a norinco 870 clone. Sometime soon I'm putting a new stock on it that has a pistol grip, and a mag extension. It'd be nice with more capacity, because as morbid as it sounds: if I've put 7 slugs into the bear's vitals and it's still eating me, the 8th round is mine. It takes choke tubes and it's my only shotgun, so it does partridge/duck/goose/rabbit duty too. There's nothing nice about it, but it does a decent job. I'm confident in my abilities with it, however it has had a couple of simple malfunctions. I'm going to try to tune it up a bit to take care of that.

If I was in polar bear country, I think a custom remington 7600 pump would be ideal: all stainless, in .458 win mag, with battue sights, and an AR-style rear stock to be able to adjust length of pull for parkas, pack straps etc....... something like that would be quick sighting, quick firing, super-powerful, and still reliable as long as you handload for the cold weather. I think they used to make a high-caliber custom 7600, I guess it's beefed up a bit. Right now they're only offered in .30-06.

re: the saiga. I think it's under one of the prohibition orders. I think the only AK-derived thing that's legal here is the Valmet. I could be wrong though, it looks like a nice choice for a semi. But I'm sure I would have seen one at the range by now.

...looked up the old 7600. It was only .35 whelen. Too bad, I don't think I'd want less than .375 H&H for that task. With the .458 you would put it on its butt right away with a half-decent shot placement.
