NAFTA-gate???

Post by Widow »

Will Obama's 'wink wink' on free trade help Clinton win precious votes in Ohio?

Here's what happened, based in part on a leaked memorandum obtained by The Associated Press, and on reports from CTV: Early in February, Austan Goolsbee, one of Mr. Obama's senior economic advisers, talked informally with officials at the Canadian consulate in Chicago. A consulate staffer wrote a memo based on the conversation, in which he said Mr. Goolsbee advised the Canadians that “much of the rhetoric that may be perceived to be protectionist is more reflective of political manoeuvring than policy.”
<snip>
The CBC reported yesterday that the affair had infuriated Mr. Obama and his senior advisers to the point that it could impair relations between an Obama administration and the Canadian government, quoting an Obama campaign official saying, “Why is Canada meddling in the internal affairs of the United States. … To provide such a false account at this juncture on the eve of a crucial election is not an accident, and it is really, really stupid.” But the Obama official who spoke to The Globe and Mail described the reaction as “overblown.”

A politician caught lying ????
I am shocked ,totaly shocked ,i have never heard of that before

To compare this career politician to JFK is the biggest lie .
Now that he has lost his biggest cheerleader S Powers it will be interesting to watch just how smart he is .

It should be called a gate as no plumbers have been caught yet just another lying useless politician who has done nothing for anyone except vote 'Present' in important votes .That would tell you where he stands, what he really believes but he dodged voting as he was paid to do .It is that reasoning that leads me not to trust this lying politician .You can trust someone who express's thier views in voting on important issues .Even if you do not agree with their views. To avoid expressing your true views by voting is a display of political cunning that shows the dangerous shrewd character flaws of this professional politician.

This guys is as slimey as anything that has ever crawled out of the potamac .And do not get me started on Shrillary

NAFTA's legacy: the worst agreement we ever signed
There is no doubt that the sector that devised the scheme in the first place and sold it to politicians have benefited greatly from this investors' rights agreement and its predecessor. The continent's largest corporations have greatly reduced regulatory impediments to their profits, radically lowered labour costs, gutted Canada's sovereign capacity to pass new environmental legislation and, in terms of investment restrictions, virtually erased the borders.

All of those corporate benefits, however, have been extremely bad for other aspects of Canada and for ordinary Canadians.

OTTAWA — Canadians would support using energy supplies as a bargaining chip if the United States tries to reopen the North American Free Trade Agreement, a new poll suggests.

Respondents to The Canadian Press Harris-Decima poll generally like NAFTA and were willing to play hardball against the Americans in any renegotiation.

Almost half of them felt that NAFTA has been good, or very good for the economy, while only 27 per cent thought it's a bad deal.

The survey suggests that 61 per cent of people would support using oil as a lever if Washington demands a renegotiation of the treaty.

Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential contender, has said he wants to open up the deal, which embraces Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Bruce Anderson, Harris-Decima president, said Canadian support for NAFTA includes majorities of both Liberal and Conservative voters, although NDP support is much weaker.

"Canadians like the idea of free trade," he said.

They're ready to be tough in negotiations, he added.

"They would prefer not to reopen the agreement, but would expect their government to take a strong bargaining stance if the agreement were to be reopened because of developments in the United States."

He said they understand that Canadian energy exports are important to the United States and would make a good bargaining chip.

The poll questioned just over 1,000 people in an omnibus telephone survey between Feb. 28 and March 3 and is considered accurate to within 3.1 percentage points 19 times in 20.
