one day when we are all reliant on GPS and have done away with traditional ground based navaids, the US military will simply turn it off and we'll be screwed
Hence the Galileo GNSS (Global Navigation satellite System)
http://www.thalesresearch.com/Default.aspx?tabid=411
The first of the European satellite has be sent a few years back and the system should be operational shortly. You current GPS receiver will be capable of receiving either the US or the Galileo system. The difference is that unlike the US system, the Galileo is a for profit business. There will be fees associated to its use, but the Gov cant turn it off because they feel their "security" is at risk.
One reason (not the only reason, but one of the reasons) why there are still few GPS approach in Europe (who usually is much more in tune with technology then our US friends) is simply because they do not want to rely on the US system...

Re: GPS
Anyone heard any rumors about Galileo and WAAS compatibility? What happened to Glonass?
Oh and I could give you a kln90b power point. Would that help? I found the Manuel, although long and dry, the best way to learn the operations. If your teaching a course or something just make a quick power point summarizing each chapter.
