Pearson closed yesterday?

Heard Pearson was closed yesterday...for a disabled aircraft. Apparently they were having trouble moving it. Any truth to this? I hope it was nothing serious.

Took off at 1930 on 33R and saw a WJ on with fire trucks around it on 23 I think it is.

They blew most of their tires on landing. They taxied off, but rwy 23 was closed for about an hour while they gathered up assorted bits of tire.

They closed 33R too. We got ground-stopped in YOW for a little over an hour cause they were down to 1 runway (33L)

I dont think they would close an entire major airport like that because a plane was disabled.

They would ,however, close the appropriate runway.

Actually, there was a ground stop of about 1 hour. Things were right down to a crawl for a while.

The winds were 280/30G45 for most of the day, just favoring the 23/24R/L operation. About the time of the incident they were back and forth 280-290. The disabled aircraft stopped on 23 short of H2 which blocked 33L. Winds became 300/25G35 which left us only one runway, 33R. With airborne traffic already on the way based on a flow rate of 50 arrivals an hour and one runway with an arrival capacity of 25 hour, there was holding and delays. Departures were also backed up: maybe 20-30 in the line for most of the evening. I left at 11pm and we still only had one runway although the winds were decreasing. Departures were almost done but there were still a load of delayed arrivals.
The airport did not close.

Narrative: The Westjet Airlines Limited Boeing 737-700 series aircraft (operating as flight WJA649) was concluding a scheduled IFR flight from Ottawa (M-CIA) (CYOW) to Toronto (LBPIA) (CYYZ). The aircraft blew three (3) tires during the landing on runway 23 and came to a stop, blocking runway 33L. At approximately the same time, the winds forced a runway change to land and depart off of runway 33R. The aircraft was disabled for extended period of time so a ground stop was initiated. The aircraft was repaired and cleared the runway at 0245Z. Runway 33L was available for operations again at 0250Z. Ops. impact -- unknown.

I sorry but 25 arrivals per hour. How is it that a airport in the states can move twice the amount of traffic with one runway than here. Some body up there had sure as hell get transport there a figure something out.

There is no reason for such a low amount of traffic at a so called MAJOR International Airport.

Again guys, I know your hands are tied by regulations, i'm sure if you could you would move more but at todays fuel prices something has to be done

And you're a controller where again?
I worked tower for 90 minutes from just after 2100 local. Arrival spacing was 3 miles, yes THREE miles and there was a departure in almost every hole. Any larger holes had 2 or even 3 departures in them. Do you know how long it takes to fly 3 miles at 120kts into a 40kt wind and then try and get off the runway? The runway was being used to the maximum extent possible. There was no wasted space.
There was a reason for such a flow rate: high winds and one runway for both arrivals and departures. Any airport in the world in the same conditions would not have had any higher throughput.

The Westjet Airlines Boeing 737-700 aircraft (C-FWBX, Flight 649) was landing on runway 23 at Toronto after a flight from Ottawa. The METAR was reporting the wind from 270 degrees at 23 gusting to 33 knots. The aircraft touched down and, during the landing roll, the flight crew was notified by the tower of smoke from the main landing gear. As the aircraft slowed down the flight crew felt a thumping coming from the main landing gear. The aircraft was stopped on the runway and was met by ARFF. The two port side tires had failed and the inboard starboard tire was damaged but still holding pressure. Passengers were deplaned on the runway and transported to the terminal by busses. There were no injuries, and the damage was limited to the tires. The aircraft had departed Ottawa under MEL 32-2-1 which is for an inoperative anti-skid system. The runway at Toronto was reported as bare and dry.

Was two aircraft behind and briefly heard the situation on tower before our Go around from inside the FAF. We were given a wind of 310 24 gusting 42, which would likely, closely correspond to their touchdown wind. Not hard to imagine lighting up the downwind brake with that wind particularly with no anti skid.

Although there were delays ATC did an impressive job of moving aircraft with one runway. When we departed an hour later we got in line for 33R abeam the Air Canada hanger, and was in the air within 25 minutes. Three mile spacing between arrivals, and a departure, sometimes two between each arrival. It is the first time I have seen a Canadian tower move aircraft like they do in the states.

Yeah, like poor Air Canada, and all the media coverage they got from a declared Mayday, and loss of cabin pressure only a day or two after the E190 severe turbulence and/or autopilot malfunction. Face it, sometimes AC get's it, sometimes WJ get's it.
