Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
Heard rumours of this not sure if this is true. Would be hard for them as they do not have a hanger there. Anyone heard anything of this?
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
It's gonna be a real treat for their line maintenance guys performing "snowbank" maintenance....
I still shudder when I remember watching Bradley Air mechs, changing tires on 748's and Twotters behinds sheets of plywood trying to hide from the wind at -40c....
I heard they have the materials for a new cargo shed already up in YFB, they are just waiting for some warmer weather to start construction...
I do wonder if they will set up some sort of pre-fab canvas type hangar like Borek has up there, but obviously bigger to fit a trash 8...

Regional One is running it for em for CDN North. They just started this week I think
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
Yep yep. Can North is using the regional dashs now. No more Borek 99's. Hope it works out for those boys
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
So far there running two dash 8's in YFB, and also having Calm air run a Saab340 from Rankin through cape dorset to YFB and back, till im assuming they get more machines. The problem is the YFB ramp cant handle all these airplanes during rush hr, should be interesting.

Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
So what's going on with Borek there? That was most of the flying for them in the winter months. Are they going to try the skeds by themselves or are they cutting back the YFB base?
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
I believe Borek had a "falling out" with CDN North sometimes last year, and they are now "in bed" with First Air, running some skeds for them out of YFB and maybe even the central arctic (Keewatin region)??

Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
Gee, I hadn't heard that rumour yet
Canadian North began doing scheduled flight service to Kenn Borek Air destinations out of Iqaluit as of April 1st. As a result, the Beech 99 has been sidelined for the time being, and a few pilots have been relocated, but no major changes.
As far as KBAL and First Air go, they charter their planes as required, and the twin otter does a "scheduled" charter to Kimmirut on a weekly basis. No comment on the Kivalliq region, not my area

Hit PANG2 and hang a left.
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
There is was not a real falling out as much as Kenn Borek could not provide the service that Canadian North required. Some times Borek would cancel flights or change them to better suit there demands. Which is fine because they are not owned or required to fly on Canadian North's schedule. The biggest factor with Canadian bring in DHC-8's was the awarding of the passenger medical transfer contract for Nunavut and it requires a lavatory on board as per the contract.Kosiw wrote:I believe Borek had a "falling out" with CDN North sometimes last year, and they are now "in bed" with First Air, running some skeds for them out of YFB and maybe even the central arctic (Keewatin region)??
Canadian North is also as mentioned above building a new cargo/hangar facility to accommodate the Dash's.
Rectum, damn near killed 'em

Nah, just change in opportunity for good ol Cdn North. I realize assuming does nothing in this world, but I believe it may have had something to do with a certain food mail contract. Again, just an assumption. Don't quote me on thisRowdy wrote:Rumour has it there was no falling out, just a change in the reqs.
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
Seeing that the owners of Canadian North are Inuit and Inuvialuit shareholders who want to see their airline in their communities across the north it shouldn't come as a big surprise that new sked services are up and running with Canadian North aircraft in the Kitikmeot and Baffin regions.

Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
I haven't been in YFB since the scheds started...anyone know if they're filling the Dash(s)?
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
So far I think there doing fairly well with there loads, however I dont believe the companies up there make too much money when it comes to the passengers up there, I believe they just wanna be in a better position when the food mail contract comes up for bid. Even if they take a hit for the first little while.
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
It's gonna get stupid again on the apron during rush hour times there....probably even worse than last summer....with 7F, 5T, Borek, Summit, Air Nunavut and now CDN North...plus the ever present transient aircraft....just wish the airport manager would come up with some game plan to leave the area right in front of the terminal and taxiway C open, cause it can be a bitch to move around those twotters and dorniers....

Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
It would also make things alot easier if they just had at least one fuel truck at the airport to supply the aircraft that arent on the pits or the fuel cabinets. It would eliminate alot of the towing.
Re: Canadian North bringing dash 8 to Iqaluit?
This is more of a technical question for those Dash 8 guys out there, how far north will the Dash 8 AHARS system work? I am aware First Air had to make changes to their systems in the ATR 42 to be able to operate in the north...
