Military vs Civilian
Hello to all.
Just a quick question concerning ATC training. Military or NavCanada?
After checking out, are they considered equal or are they two different licenses?
How easy would it be to go from civilian to military or the other way around?
Thank you

Re: Military vs Civilian
IIRC, only officers can work tower, terminal and PAR. Others can work ground only, so I guess the license within the military can be different. There are quite a few ex-military controllers in the Nav Canada world, but not sure about the other way around.
Re: Military vs Civilian
I think it is pretty different as not all military controllers check out in the civilian system,
Re: Military vs Civilian
They're not too busy there either. I saw some numbers that were a couple years old of the military towers and the busiest was Comox at around 40000 per year.
Re: Military vs Civilian
You might want to check that for PAR controllers, I think they are NCMs.NJ wrote:IIRC, only officers can work tower, terminal and PAR. PAR and Ground controllers are NCMs.
Comox and Moose Jaw are the two busiest - not crazy busy like an international - but lots of VFR and IFR popups, transients, live para, intersecting runways, multiple MRVA's, etc..
The Military guys take their course at Cornwall - I believe the first part is very similar - then they branch off and discuss air weapons etc.

It would be a different kind of busy that we're used to. I know I wouldn't be too fond of mixing a few F18's in with a couple DHC5's in the circuit.

Not too bad really - the fast air conduct their circuits at 1500' AGL while the rest of us slow pokes are down at 1000' AGL.
It's fun when the plastic jets are in town - we do spot landings on the arrestor cables.

The military guys at NCTI told us that if we keep running planes together, go military. They're always looking for a good radar intercepter.
