Pilots vs Engineers- at Your place

Post by just curious »

Just curious as to whether the drivers in your company like and respect Engineers, or whether they regard you as aliens from another planet.

I know I couldn't possible do my job without our field guys, and the guys in the heavy shop produce sometimes magical results. Of maybe 160 guys, there are less than a handful that I don't know on a first-name basis, and almost every one of them tells me something new about a machine I've got 10000 hours on.

But... I just came back from a place in NWO where not a single company has their own AMO, nor do they know the name of the guy who's twisting wrenches on their machine. Go figure.

Obviously you didn't come to Red Lake for your survey...

I believe that the other half of a pilot is an engineer - and vice versa. That is a true partnership, and a great place to be, where you can't have one without the other.

When we contract our airplane, and base it in remote locations, my partner and I travel as a team. It's certainly not the only way to operate an aircraft, but when your life, and your livelihood depend on it - why wouldn't you?

Cheers,
Snoopy

It is what you make of it! You can have a pilot/engineer bashing contest or play nice in the sand box. Without pilots I would not have a job and vis versa.

I will not allow the pilot/engineer thing to happen where I work because I would have to hate myself!!!

All of our employees seem to respect what each other does as part of the team. As part of both sides of the question I encourage the interaction of both groups because without one, you will not have the other...

Most of the drivers I work with are good, but there is always one or two in the crowd who thinks his sh*t doesn't stink. I understand bad days and am tolerant too it like water off a duck's back since I have them too, but one driver in our company is gonna end up rolled up and shoved in the hangar floor drain one of these days. He is one of those guys that thinks the plane will crash if a friggin light bulb burns out, argues to no end over MEL items (face it, the MEL says it is ok to fly, and ultimately it is the captain's decision to take the aircraft but there is no need to argue with me at great lengths about it. Fly it or don't, I don't care. You have all the info you need on paper, you don't need to engage in an argument with mtce, make up your own mind without going out of your way to ruin my day with your attitude in the process. My feelings do not get hurt if you refuse to fly based on an MEL item). He talks down on mtce when something is broken or when troubleshooting an intermittent problem, and then talks to us like friggin children when a problem he had gets fixed "Ooooh, you guys did a really good job...no REALLY, I am really glad you guys solved it...blah, blah, blah. A simple "hey plane flies great" or "that intermittent xxx problem seems to be solved" is good enough. He is not intelligent enough to give correct information about his snags or troubleshooting, so his opnion of how well the aircraft does or does not work is as valid to me as what I flushed this morning before brushing my teeth. Hopefully he gets his time in and moves on to another operator, then he can be someone else's problem

I am starting to see how a chief pilot's attitude affects his/her underlings. I have been in enough hangars to prove my theory. If the CP takes a friendly, proactive approach to communication with maint., then most likely so will the rest of the pilots.

If you have guessed it, I am an ame, not a pilot.
