Quickest way to get hired
I am currently attending a college aviation program and have about a year and a half left. Although I still have lot of time left, I am wondering once I graduate, what is the best and quickest way to get hired at Air Canada. I will only have about 250 hours when I'm out, but any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Quickest way to get hired
The good news is that the industry is moving like crazy, with many operators having to lower their min requirements, due to so much hiring at the airlines. Keep your chin up, work hard, and stay with it... it'll pay off in the end.
Best of luck.

What is the rush?
The best flying (IMHO) was the stuff I did along the way to the airlines. Northern strips, gravel, VFR, piston, charter, etc....
You will hear many, many people tell you to enjoy the ride along the way. Easier said than done (myself included) when you have your sights set on the big machines, but really, the stuff you do early in your career will stay with you forever. Enjoy the comraderie at the smaller companies, the "hands-on" approach the owners will give you. Never again will you have so much control over "your" operation.
The ILS and autopilot will always be there for you down the road.
Enjoy!

Absolutely true.
I'm flying widebodies worldwide for Ac and don't get me wrong I do love it and it's the best job out there.
That being said the most fun,the purest flying and the lifetime friendships where had flying Navajo's and Cessna's.
I remember those times as the best in my career,if not my life.
If I could do it all over again I would do it the exact same way but I would slow down and enjoy the process because I spent most of my time just trying to get to the next level.
Most roads will lead you to the airlines eventually so don't sweat it to much.Try to do the flying that you enjoy, take lot's of pictures, make lot's of great friends and we'll see you at 350 in about 7-10 years time.

Baby bus and Tim Tam are right about the journey. Enjoy the ride, just stay proficient and keep studying along the way. Strive to keep within narrow margins, 50 feet and 2 degrees.
Take a million pictures, and collect and maintain email addresses, and pilot's parent's written addresses (we all seem to be gypsies)
Of the 100's of guys I know who wanted to fly for the bigs, all of them are.
Have fun.

Re: Quickest way to get hired
Of the pilots that I know who finished up their training around the same time I did (mid 2001) - the ones who have made it to flying the big iron the quickest are those that moved up North (some even without a job), slugged it out on the ramp or dock and then flew their asses off. In doing so, they did a good job, kept their nose clean and did their best to enjoy their time.
The trick is that in order to move up quickest, you need to be focused on doing a good job at the job you're doing - whether it's the ramp or flying something that was built before you were born - and not focused on what the next 'bigger and better' plane will be. That being said, it's also important to be prepared for the next step up. Luckily the industry is doing well right now, so your ramp time will hoepfully be minimized. While working the ramp can seem like a step backwards, if you're at a good company, once you get flying, things go by pretty quick. A few of the guys I worked the ramp with in 2002 got on with AC by 2006.

Re: Quickest way to get hired
While this thread is going on:
Any chance AC or WJ would have interest in a dual citizen who's currently flying right seat RJ in warmer climes? I've been thinking of moving back but I don't know a soul at any big Canadian carrier.
Also, how much does aviation degree matter? I have a few degrees from good schools (gave up a more lucrative career for this) but not in anything resembling aviation. Would an aviation Masters degree help me at all?

What flying school/ college actually tells you the truth??? The shortage a pilot will have is "Cash" for abhout 5-10 years767 wrote:Im just wondering, the flight college you are attending, didnt they tell you about this?
Mine sure didn't tell me how much a 24 of pop, a 100lb'r of propane, or a 45 G drum of diesel weighed. We were all going to be jet pilots in 2 years.... But I did learn about MLS & LORAN
