You think we pilots were dropped on our heads when we were small children .... what I can't figure out is who is stupid enough to put up the bucks to start an airline.
I remember, years ago, reading a comment an airline stock analyst made about a guy who wanted to start up a LCC:
"Someone should take that guy's checkbook away and tape up his mouth, for his own good."
I suspect that airlines may be a status thing, for rich people who have a Gulfstream V and that just isn't doing it, to keep up with the neighbours

Most of the pilots I have met are all about the GT's. Good times aplenty indeed. Unfortunately the media makes us think there are many perks that there are not. But It is good to see that it makes us laugh at how pathetic we are as opposed to being bitter. Suicide is for dentists.

on a slightly less sarcastic note, the problem with us is that we have discovered how f*cking awesome it is seeing the sunrise from 8000 ASL in your own little ship, see the rockies from just above the level of the highest peak, see the glaciers of the coast mountains on a sunny day, and, get to satisfy that need to explore, and get paid for it. Now the downside is those of us that have to put up with all the rest of the crap to experience those things. Some of us are lucky and get a job that pays well, good base, etc. Some have crap pay, and live in the smallest, northern most dot on the map. but we all get to have fun in our job at some point. Not many people have fun in their job on a regular basis. And sometimes the only fun they have is the office christmas party. And even a soupy snowy night down to minimums, with a 10 knot quartering tailwind on an ndb approach in the hills to a crappily lit gravel strip, while it does get the blood flowing, and the hair on the back of your neck standing up, well, when you are safe on the ground, (or even in the missed heading to your alternate) you realise how much fun that stuff is.

How's aviation the MacDonalds of the Transport Industry?Hey___Pilot wrote:Aviation is the Mcdonalds of the Transportation industry.
OK so what do I mean by that. Well, who in their right mind would work for basically nothing after paying out 30-40,000 dollars in order to get a licence to fly. You can get a Class 1 drivers licence for 1500 dollars and make 60,000 a year in your first job. So here we are ....pilots... thinking we are so smart to pay for a licence in order to make poverty wages. On top of which once we have experience we also have to pay for training in order to further our careers...( I mean those PPC on bigger aircraft).
So what makes us tick?? Why is it that we in general put ourselves through this ....to get what???

Hey_Pilot...doesn't sound like your very happy with what YOU choose to do...maybe this ain't your line of work? Sorry but I hate it when people bite the hand that feeds 'em behind that hands back. Why not go to your boss and tell Her/Him that you feel your worth more? Are you?

Why don't all the whiny pilots on here go and drive a dump truck, or go roofing...... on do any other blue collar job......working 9-5 every single day until you retire.
then come back on here, and tell me how hard it is to sit and watch the country go by at 300 kts
some companies are shit... given... but in general we have it pretty damn good.

Lets look at it from this perspective.
A company buys a million dollar aircraft then pays the insurance company $50,000 per year to insure it.
Yet in many cases the pilot is deemed to be only worth $20,000 per year to fly it.
That is 2% of the capital cost....
How come an aircraft salesperson will get 5% to 10% just to resell the thing, last time I looked the qualifications for a sales person were less stringent than the qualifications required to fly it. Not to mention the risk factor is not even in the equasion.
Anyone besides me see something wrong with this situation?

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.
