SASKATOON — The pilot of a Canadian Northern Airlines Boeing 737 was forced to make a landing at the Saskatoon airport this morning while one of the plane's engines was on fire.
Saskatoon police say they were called to the airport at about 1:30 a.m.
Airport authorities extinguished the blaze on the starboard engine.
The five crew and 102 passengers were not injured and were taken to the air terminal to wait for lodgings to be arranged.
The chartered aircraft Flight 1714 had departed from the Fort McMurray area and was scheduled to land in Saskatoon before continuing on to Montreal.
Transport Canada is investigating the cause of the fire.

Never point your aircraft to some place your brain hasn't already been 5 minutes earlier.

Gee, sounds like this pilot had a handful...single pilot on the 737. And was it really a forced landing if they were scheduled to land at that airport?...was scheduled to land in Saskatoon...

The crew landed with the plane on fire and everybody was fine...how it's worded doesn't really matter.
Re: Engine fire forces jet to land in Saskatoon
Thats what all the fuss was about last night...glad to hear everything turned out OK.
Re: Engine fire forces jet to land in Saskatoon
Was the engine on fire at the time of landing or did they have an engine fire, and after shutting it down,etc..the fire went out?

Re: Engine fire forces jet to land in Saskatoon
No engine fire! Short final eng had high vibes and EGT increase. Shut engine down after landing. Once again the media are full of Shite.
Re: Engine fire forces jet to land in Saskatoon
NO FIRE??? If there wasn't a fire wouldn't that have been corrected in the 2nd narrative?? If the engine wasn't on fire would AARF have pretended to put it out 24 minutes after the aircraft landed. Will be interesting to see this one play out. Good to hear everyone is OK. Anyone know how bad the damage is to the AC??

Actually, 100LL posted it a minute before I did ... somehow I didn't notice. My bad.

Re: Engine fire forces jet to land in Saskatoon
Hence the reason why 4engines=Keep pressing and 2engines=declare. But with that said, an engine fire is always a challenge, but bet you the F/O probably learnt a chunck..or 2.
Re: Engine fire forces jet to land in Saskatoon
No fire.. engine severe damage... high vibs with EGT increase at 600 feet AGL... no fire light or bell... crew shut down the engine.
Due to the heat from the engine destroying itself there was smoke so CFR crews foamed the engine.
The CFR crews did not "extinguish the blaze" as the media has reported, they foamed as a precaution.

.... well, not after it's ingested into the core of a running CFM it doesn't. But, to give them instant vib and high egt, - if it was indeed a bird, I'd wager it was larger than a swallow... Besides, those little guys usually stay low enough to eat bugs.Arthur Q wrote:I think a swallow remains a bird at any altitude...

A lot depends on where you are what words mean, bird and swallow in England might mean something entirely different.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.
