Cherokee 140 on Floats

Post by nofixedaddress »

Anyone ever attempted to fly one on floats or seen one on floats? I got a call to fly one off a 2100 foot strip off a dolly. Seems like a suicide mission to me, anyone have any experience with this, either off the dolly or flying the plane on floats in general?

The runway has trees and wires at one end and a water tower at the other....... closest lake is about a 5 minute drive by car.

Thoughts?

There's one at Barrie /Springwater also on floats. I believe there is a problem in that the 140 was never certified for float operations. This one has 180 landing gear attach fittings but again there might be a paperwork problem.

The other thought is that with the 150 hp engine and an airfoil design that isn't really suited for high lift/lower speeds, this plane may only be good for going for a boat ride when loaded.

Low wing Pipers on floats? Okay, I've seen a Cherokee 6 and an Aztec on floats...that's it though.

PS the cherokee 180 and 140 have the same gear (wheels) including attach points

That would be a short strip on wheels let alone floats of a dolly! Far too short with the obstacles. With the Cherokee 140 with a short wing span just trailer it to the lake….the police are usually more that accommodating.

Has it been flown out of there before? Talk to the last guy who did it. Find out why he doesn't want to do it this time.

You can't do it. Some other dummy is slated to auger in this week - not your week.

nofixedaddress,

May I suggest, just pass and stay away from trouble. This seems a bit risky to me. It's not a type of aircraft to try that kind of stuff.

No worries, I'm staying away, I never even intended to fly it off the dolly, I was more looking for someone who was crazy enough to try it while I watch with my feet firmly on the ground. Or at least someone who has maybe tried it somewhere else to see their thoughts. I am going to reccommend the trailer to the lake eary in the am and than go from there.

I'll let you know how it goes and maybe post some pics of the adventure!

Cheers

There are few interesting types on Doug Ronan's float plane site.

http://www.dougronan.com/ontario/images ... ctures.htm

The Cherokee is a 180 model from Australia and, while it looks like it's out of it's element, it doesn't look half as scary as the Aero-Coupe below it!

I have to swing by the airport today so I will take a pic. Its completely experimental and its the 140 so I highly doubt she has the power to get up in 2100.

It is quite the site to see.

Maybe if we all push.

Hmmmm, as I recall the wing on most Pipers is a very efficient lifting device at low airspeeds.....

.......I'm interested in seeing how this machine performs.
