.1 or .2 to airtime on floats

Post by dabeuk »

hi

ive been flying floats the past few months and have been doing the typical +.1 to airtime for flight time as i did on wheels.

just recently another pilot has come on board with previous float time and with the companys he flew for adding +.2 was the norm, the theroy been you spend more than 8 minutes on the water taxing for takeoff and coming into dock

obviously the +.2 sounds good to me, been eager for as much time on floats as i can get.

just wondering if +.2 is the norm for floats :?:

thankyou in advance for your thoughts

That .1 , .2 or whatever you add is the time you spend on the water in motion with the intention of taking off, plus the time it takes you to come off the step, and get tied up to a dock. Being able to get started and airborne in less than five minutes had better mean the the airplane was warmed up and ready, and less than 5 to sail in means light waves, and a clear access to a nice dock. I'd say off-hand that .2 on a normal cycle, and .3 in big water is a lot nearer the mark.

If you have any problems with it, just average your actual air time with flight time over about 5 or 6 flights in varying conditions, and you'll see that its at least on average .2 to .3, there will be sometimes when it'll be .5 if you need to taxi a long way in a shitty situation.

Log it the way that it is!!

It's not about just adding a .1 or .2, its about telling the truth. Now that the busy season is apon us, adding a point two to every leg might max out your duty time for the month if your busy. Log reality. In the float world they will ask you. "Is that hard time or .2 time?". It goes 6 feet farther in an interview if you can admit that your flight time totals are hard time totals.

beat me to it and in the busy months add only .1 to maximize your $$ you don't want to duty out. slow months .2 to maximize your logbook.

Funny thing is (with a new pilot) the time you spend on the water is more valuable than the time you spend in the air. Unlike taxiing around a big airport like a dodo, learning nothing, but padding the old log book.

Whether it's .1 or .2 it's the only part of the flight that really matters in terms of float experience, i.e. is unique to float flying.

As JC says it's really what you do dock to dock.. If you are taking the eastbound out of YWH, and landing eastbound in CXH you'd be hard pressed to do it even in .2.. Or if you are doing a southbound departure out of Male you would be hard pressed to even get the take off done in .2.. Whatever you log, make sure it is realistic. If it takes you that long, it does. If it pushes the max flight time, oh well, that's the rules. Just do whatever you think is right and truthfull.. If you need to log light to make more money, then you are getting paid the wrong way.. IMHO..
