Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Came thorugh YYC on Tuesday, saw a bunch of fighters on the ramp at Shell and what looked like a Tornado ( brief glance through the a passenger window of a Dash-8 ) doing circuits. What goes on there ?
Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..

I think maple flag is on.If not these guys are here getting ready to go to Iraq.
Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Maple Flag is over...was in late may...
Altiplano was right, are here to support training exercises in CFB Suffield.
Have heard they are leaving the day before the start of the Calgary Stampede...RAF guys aren't too happy about that...they sure are taking up a lot of room on Landmark's Ramp though...

They go their to blow stuff up. Apparently the insurgents have blown up everything worth blowing up in Iraq, so they come to Alberta
Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Does anybody know generally what kind of schedule they fly? I'd love to go down to the parking lot off Mcknight and get some pictures.
Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Just go down there for around an hour any time from around 7am onwards and you will be bound to see them either leaving or returning. No set schedule that I can tell (my work backs right onto McCall lake golf course) but they are pretty constant.Cobra64 wrote:Does anybody know generally what kind of schedule they fly? Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Anyone got any pictures of the ramp, or in action?
Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Well the horror scope forecast said I would meet a ferenehr today...
It was a challenge shooting thru the chain link fence at Landmark.
And then the flash went off accidentally. I bit later one of the boys comes up to the fence, and I am wondering.... And then he hands me a XIII Squadron Stabbed Cats decal.
Nice...
I guess I post the pics when they get approved???
Anyways, I've noticed a couple things - the last time I saw a Tornado power up, I saw a 'contrai'l coming out the belly... seems to me the afterburner was lit at the time.
Tonight, right when they shut down, it puked a load of liquid out the belly...
These boys are loud!!!

Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Typical Brits. Nice guys. A chap on ramp 7 had his camera out when a Tornado taxiied by so the airplane stopped just so he could get a good picture.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Probably felt the need to go low level.... haha I hear a King Air on the radio say they're going "low level", I'm on the treetops so I ask them what altitude they're at... "4,000 feet".co-joe wrote:Heard them on the radio yesterday. "Trouble 22" cool ident.

Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
If you rode along with them when they were low level you would sh*t your pants. The tornado might not be a stellar performer in the turning category, but if you want a bomb to land on a pinpoint target within a second of when it's supposed to land there, in the kind of weather that would keep a duck grounded then they're your boys. And they're nice guys too.AntiNakedMan wrote:Probably felt the need to go low level.... haha I hear a King Air on the radio say they're going "low level", I'm on the treetops so I ask them what altitude they're at... It was only a matter of time until they started using northeast Calgary as a bombing range!stmymdy wrote:I have a gooder for y'all

Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
What was going on there? Firefighting practice?
Re: Military in YYC Tuesday ..
Heard an update today that they're leaving Wednesday for Halifax on their way back home. Will be supported enroute with some VC-10s. They have already had some large fuel tanks reinstalled so not sure if they'll be flying much, if at all tomorrow. They didn't fly at all this afternoon. Grey L1011 was also in this afternoon, unsure if it is there as part of the Tornado group or not...they are often used to support the troops out in Suffield.
Apparently the Snowbirds are once again going to do a flyover for the Calgary Stampede parade on Friday. They should be arriving sometime Thursday afternoon or evening.
