Jazz laying off Pilots!!! It is happening

My friend who flies for Jazz was told last week that he would be layed off. It is happening in Canada, fuel prices!!!! Does anyone know of any other pilots that are being let go?

zero pilots have been laid off at Jazz. IF there are any layoffs, it won't be until later in the fall once the next equipment bid comes out.

So whomever was told they are being laid off, I call BS.

My friend flies a Dash8 for Jazz out of YUL, he does not know the exact date he will be layed off but he has been told. I guess most of the new hires for Jazz were already given the news. The industry currently is taking a hard hit, just look around.

Before Jazz or AC can layoff any pilots, they must first go through a mitigation process. This involves reducing everyone's blocking average to 75 or 77 hrs (I dont remember the exact number), offer buyout/early retirement packages, and offering LOAs. Once that's all said and done, if there is a surplus, they will layoff.

Fuel costs should be going down. As of yesterday, $122/barrel...the lowest in nearly two months.

I think it's safe to say that most of the new hires at Jazz and Air Canada are aware that the possibility of layoff is there. At AC, duing the 90's layoffs, the pilots reduced the amount of hours they worked to reduce the layoffs required. I expect it would be the same today.

The thing you should bear in mind is that the contract negotiations are coming up. For the last 25 years or so, layoffs and cutbacks have been threatened just before negotiations as a sabre-rattling tactic. Right after layoffs, hiring re-started.

In the event that crews are laid off, not many of the individuals burnt their bridges when they left their old companies. I can think of a dozen who left us who could walk into their old jobs.

Whatever the current economic situation, AC will lose crews to retirement, and Jazz to Westjet. Takes a lot of the pressure off.

I was in KRT and spoke to some fellows from Emirates on their A340. Can't get enough pilots all the flying you can want and some pretty good money. there are other places with awesome flying besides YYZ YUL and dare I say it YVR.

My point was that no one has been laid off at Jazz. Later you said:

The difference is not something I would consider semantics. It maybe a problem with past, present and future tense.

Back to the topic at hand, the threat of layoffs and actual layoffs are two very different things. As mentioned by Just Curious, over estimating the amount of layoffs prior to a contract negotiation is SOP. I won't believe the numbers being thrown around until they are on the street. LOA's and early retirements can easily offset the current numbers that have been mentioned.

They've recently announced we will be able to bid for LOAs, and reduced blocks. Nothing has been said of furlough for pilots yet. It'll be a month or two before we know.

"attendant" comes from the french verb, Attendre, to wait.
Therefore by making you wait, those ramp attendants are just doing what they think they're supposed to do...

It just happens that the ones in "La Belle Province" are just more aware of their job title origin.

Blueskies, where are you getting your info from? Go guns, and myself and other on this forumn are active Jazz pilots and believe me we are far enough down the seniority list that we would definately hear something about being laid off. On our company website the only news has been about voluntary LOAs. So no one, I repeat NO ONE has been laid off from Jazz. And hopefully with the LOAs, reduced block and attrition ( I know 4 guys who left this month alone) there will be no lay offs.

manpower is a killing in this base, especially the smart ass doing the US ramp planning that doesn't really give a s*** if an AC waits 45' short of gate.

Emirates has been canceling road shows/interviews because they're saturated with pilot resumes. India is the process of getting rid of as many expats as possible.

In the United States right now it is a blood bath with pilots getting laid off everywhere.

It's not just high oil prices that are killing the industry (which even at $125 are still twice what they were last year), the very real economic downturn, the housing collapse and credit crunch are also taking a very large toll. The next hit will be when governments start taxing industrial polluters.

It's going to be fascinating when this hits Canada full force (Canada usually lags about a year or so behind).

I can guarantee that the language used in the transition from the little hiring boom Canada had for the last 2 years to the upcoming bust will be identical to the language used anytime an economy transitions from boom to bust.

It'll start with denial and hope, which you're already starting to see on this forum.

Then when things start sliding you'll start hearing talk about "the bottom is near", "things will recover soon... it's only temporary". Then even more denial and hope.

Then the language will transition to anger and blame once people realize the bust cycle is real.

I've seen this movie so many times before.

It goes the same way everytime.
