Whats up at YXD?
I have been hearing the debate about YXD being axed in the not so distant future.
Speaking to a good friend who flies a YXD based Hawker he was saying they are going to move to there new digs at YEG.
He also says several others are planning on doing so as ''something is up''.
Anyone in the know?

This has been an issue for sometime now...im expecting the plan to axe city centre will take quite sometime seeing as how there is quite a few companies flying in and out of there and medi vacs on a daily and nightly basis. Curious what company does your buddy fly for on the hawker?? and where would they hangar or ramp the A/C at YEG?

Re: Whats up at YXD?
I'm betting that hawker is the one that Millar Western owns. I think the YXD debate will continue to rage for awhile yet.
Re: Whats up at YXD?
C-GMLR is the reg. of millar western's a/c it could be the one...theres another hawker based out of city centre as well C-GMTR is owned by sunwest aviation.

There's also C-GVMP 900XP which belongs to Morningstar Partners. But like almost every other business at YXD, their lease is good until 2018.

Does it seem that the more convenient an airport is, the more likely it will be shut down?

Dont get me wrong YXD is very convienient airport. We used to fly into the airport all the time.
We only in the last year or so began using YEG on our trips into Edmonton. Our inital visit was not a good one courtesy of the FBO we used that time.We still go into YEG when hitting Edmonton but made a switch of FBO's and the service was on par with most of the big players that know what they are doing. I was also told there are now free crew cars at the FBO I speak of, so it makes it easy to get around if we need to.
Also the drive into the city is not a long one from there.
We still hit XD now and then, but EG really isnt as bad as some people say.
Just stay away from the ocean animal FBO and you should be fine.

Re: Whats up at YXD?
The future is becoming very bleak at YXD thanks to ERAA. The ERAA has been trying to close YXD for over 10 years. They even tried to get rid of a one of the rwys a few years ago. There was a backlash over that so they back down. So they cleverly started restricting all the traffic and business going into YXD to a point where it sounds like no one is flying there. Then they tell stories of how YEG is the fastest growing airport in the world all due to consolidation 10 years later (I guess the oil boom played no part). They pat them self's on the back with what a great job we are doing and slowly kill YXD. I just shake my head at how well they continue to fool the city.
Rectum, damn near killed 'em
Re: Whats up at YXD?
Closing down a runway would be an okay compromise if you can grab tons of land off it. Who needs a crosswind runway? It's just a nice to have, the pax can deal with coming in sideways on gusty days

big deal, so the airport closes. There are may around the city which could pick up the slack.
Re: Whats up at YXD?
I think the biggest issue surrounding the whole XD saga is the land value the airport is on. It's right downtown and some of the figure's that I've heard being bounced around is a million plus and acre. The developers are the one's that are pushing for the shut down. I don't think they're involved with the ERAA but they're definately adding fuel to the fire.
Its very unfortunate because John Q tax payer is just getting one side of the story. The papers are reporting how much money the land is worth and how much economic spin off all sorts of new building plans could create but no one has mentioned how expensive it would be to cancel leases and move hangars and businesses to YEG. Not the mention the environmental clean up of the site. It's been an airport for something like 80years... think of all the oil, avgas and jet fuel that has seeped into the ground.

Having trouble reaching ATC? Squak 7500
Re: Whats up at YXD?
Someone also told me there have been a few towers that were proposed for the downtown core that had to be cancelled because of height restrictions imposed by the city of Edmonton because of YXD.
Doesnt YEG have some new hangers that just recently went up?
I could have swore I saw a new one last time we flew in to EG.Although it could be full for all I know...
We go back to Edmonton this week, and are planned for EG.Then we head direct to Houston outta there.
I did a fuel price check and see there is almost a 30 cent diffirence between the FBO's at EG for Jet-A.How come the huge diffirence? The big brand FBO (that I seriously dislike and refuse to use) seems to think they can gouge the crap outta people?
