Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
That was the second G21 Turbine Air West bought and it was kept at Port Hardy, the one we flew was bought from a timber company and was really well equipped and had an executive interior...I can't remember the registration though.
The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
The one I mention was serial number 1083. At one point it was RCAF 926 based out of Rockcliffe. My dad put a bunch of time on that machine during WW2. There was a write up on a long trip that machine took into the states that appeared in the Canadian Aviation Historical Society magazine. I have the magazine and his logbook that corresponds with the trip.
A neat way to connect with dad who left us 18 year ago.
cheers

Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
Welcome .. I'll complete an annual inspection on the Beech over the month, and after that shake it out for awhile in the air. Maybe I'll call you...
Nomad already on line. Did a PPC in it back in October, and did some recurrent flying with it in April. What a hotrod after sitting in the Twotter.
Full time job keeping them tweeked for sure.

How did you manage to get that picture with the ball in the center?

Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
This old guy used to hang around the airport, he would crack us over the head if the ball was very far out......bring back memories? Step on the ball....roll the wings yadda yadda.
Just finished washing the Beech today out at the lake. Seeks so much bigger compared to my brush!
Am starting the annual inspection PDQ.
Happy flying.

Lets see if I have this right. Two Otter has no watter rudders and if you lost an engine, you'd need a boat to tow you to the dock.Conversly, if you have a one engine aircraft with water rudders, and you lost an engine... you need what?
Oh well, what do I know

Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
In an earlier post someone listed the registrations of some Be18's that included CF-WWV. I always wondered if that old bird was still flying. I used to fly it for Calm Air back in the late late 60's early 70's. Word War Five. It was a fairly recent conversion when Arnold had it. Had a real awkward cargo door.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
Beech 18 CF-WWV is registered to Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts Ltd of Nestor Falls, ON. I assume it's still active with them, as it's shown on their fleet page. There are some pics from 2005 here, including some that show the cargo door you mention.

Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
Trust me I flew one for many years and other than stuff legends are made of the Beech 18 is just a death trap .......... it was a lousy transport traner and a worse float plane.

So tell us if it was a death trap and you flew one for years how come you are still alive?

Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
Well , I`m on my 2nd season on one, and 2nd beech, and have to say the first 100 hrs were scary, but I have a alot respect for the airplane and starting to really enjoy it. It`s really a nice airplane to fly .
Re: Beech 18.... End of an era?
I flew Whiskey Whiskey Vodka, which was an ok Beech to fly, but that cargo door was (is) an accident waiting to happen when unloading propane/barrels by oneself in a big wind, or when passengers disembarking. The door, which swings upward, is held in place by a small rod which often gets mistaken as a handle by unwitting passengers, who would often grab it roughly to balance themselves (picture a middle-aged, overweight tourist trying to save themselves from doing a nosedive out the door). And in a wind, the door would wave crazily around until the rod worked itself loose and the door came crashing down (hopefully missing the pilot's head). Kind of hard to get out of the way when balancing a 100lb bottle of propane on the way out to the float. Not a good mod in my opinion.
ps the Beech 18 is hands down the best damn float plane ever built, and the most fun to fly (in my not-so-humble opinion).

I agree with Snoopy......and it is obvious that " The Shadow " either never flew one or is so inept he/she wouldn't know a good airplane from a bad oneps the Beech 18 is hands down the best damn float plane ever built, and the most fun to fly.
