You Lucky Bastards.....

Post by niss »

I got to spend some time in Algonquin this past weekend and allthough it isn't very north and it isnt all that remote where we are it still was amazing.

You guys are really lucky being able to see things like this on a day to day basis. Flying the bush has always been my dream but I had to accept more realistic goals. I dont get to see to much of this stuff here in the city.

Sure the pay can suck and so can the work, but just take a second to soak it in. Believe it or not, you are living someones dream.

Second that. There is a Lands and Forests water base visible from the highway that should be on a postcard!
Brings back memories of a simpler time..........

Sorry man, except that there's no bears caribou or moose in the pics, that's just a day at the office for most of us.

That was more or less my point. I wish my office looked like that!

It doesn't look like that all the time. Hopefully your silk scarf will prevent your ass from getting too far up your ass. It's all fun and game until you actually have to do it for a living.

What kind of physics phenomenon has to occur in order for my ass to get sucked up my ass genius? If I wanted your opinion I would have given it to you.

I was in Algonquin for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Saw a yellow turbo-beaver tied up to the dock and thought- man, I'd love to fly that thing for a job.

Nice scenery in that park. (Including all the little teeny-bopper girls in canoes. :smt047 )

Just what we need to look at, ANOTHER ordinary picture of a Beaver.

I spent some tie in ON and Algonquin pk and like JC says its ordinary for a lot of us.
Actually the reason I left ON (actually disliked it tremendously) was for that very reason.

When people think what is ordinary and boring for me is fab and outstanding its time to leave.

I am sure he is very upset that he forced you to look at another picture of a Beaver, but it's not really that ordinary, it's got a STOL kit whick makes it a bit of an unusual one, but we don't need to tell you that cause you've obviously been there and dun dat. The bit about you having to leave when people find what you see everyday as interesting is the part that really gives away your twisted view of the world :goodman:. Good luck Champ

PS I think you left some of your belongings behind in Hamilton, there seems to be a funny odour lingering.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Or here...

I lived in the city (Vancouver) for ten years and would never go back.

Lake of the Hanging Glacier in the Purcell Mountain Range.

My house is in the bottom photo next to the Columbia River wetlands.

Sometimes it's beautiful and spooky at the same time....like when you're trying to maintain 8500' with a canoe on the side, full load inside and peaks still 1000'+ higher than you. Drowndrafts can get exciting.

Sweet 7 pound 11 ounce baby jesus...if I had to fly floats through 'cumulo granite' I'd be makin diamonds out of coal!

Not many week-end warriors or 'leafers' could make it to Kluane or Nahanni. Stuff like that is no big deal to most of us, but if Algonquin is your slice of paradise that you wait 51 weeks of the year for, then enjoy it!

Well said 1340
Not to slag ON, well maybe I will.

I spent some time there and when I FINALLY got back to the North (no not T.Bay) I told my buds I spent 2 yrs in On and the standard reply was 2 min would be enough for me. Then I,d say 5 yrs and it would be 5 min would be enough for me. Bloody northerners

Hey ., that photo looks familiar, was it taken just West of the falls in Nahanni?

Whenever I get to Kluane I wonder why I left the Yukon. Moving to the OUTSIDE is not always the best for your soul.

No that picture was taken south east of Nahanni.

Can someone tell me what is so difficult about flying in the Nahanni area?

There's all those mountains and there's no horizon and you have to fly like reaally high lol!

Flying in the mountains is a piece of cake once you know a few basics. I was flying my 206 on Friday with a bulky 50 pound HD camera on one strut, 200 pounds of gear and four people inside, a few feet from the mountains.

I just stumbled across a book my Grandpa had for years about flying in the Nahanni, called Wings of the North by Dick Turner, I'm sure it's not new to many on here, but if you haven't read it, and are wondering about "how difficult" it is to fly the Nahanni, get the book, it's a fun read.

Sitting here at my desk sometimes regretting the decisions I have made, my trips to Algonquin are the closest I will get to living one of my dreams.

Sometimes I find myself longing for a 9-5 desk job with security, benefits, and weekends off. Not having to haul myself into a 40 year old plane to go bouncing around through the mountains to satisfy a customer. Or having to tell them no, disappointing them, and waving good bye to a couple grand for the company and giving us the reputation of being unreliable.

Thanks for that comment Niss, because it is worth all we go through. Just make sure you fly that Cherokee as much as you can!
