west coast fun
Hey everyone, heading out to the coast on monday(van, vic and up the coast). Thinking of knocking on a few doors along the way. Only gonna be around for 2 weeks, so time a little limited. I am not currently looking for employment but I would like, enventually to work out there. Any info on decent operators would be great. Just doing a little research for the future! Just a friendly chat would do. Also, any info on watering holes in the city would be great!! Thanks.

Well around Vancouver there's the international airport with north & south terminals. The north terminal would be useless (large operators) but the south terminal might be worth a visit, some smaller operators such as Pacific Coastal who fly Shorts 360, Bandit, 1900, etc.
Virtually the same location as the south terminal, you'll find a few float operators on the river such as Harbour Air, Seair.....and while there you can go for lunch at the Flying Beaver bar & grill, great place. Right across the road from the south terminal is Aviation World if you need any supplies.
About 1/2 drive through town (depending on traffic) to the north you'll find some more float operators like Baxter and West Coast Air who operate from Vancouver Harbour. Another nice place to visit even for just the scenery.
Heading over to the island you'll probably want to get the ferry from Tsawassen (south of Vancouver near Boundary Bay airport) over to Swartz Bay (Victoria).....it takes about 1.5 hrs. Vic airport is a short drive after you exit the ferry terminal, a few key operators there such as Navair, Juanair etc. Downtown Victoria is another great place to visit as a tourist, and in the harbour there are a few float ops such as West Coast Air.
If you drive north from Victoria to Nanaimo it'll take maybe a little over an hour. There's not a whole lot going on in Nanaimo. Baxter Air and a few others operate from in the harbour. I guess you could stop in at the Nanaimo airport and visit Cat Driver if he hasn't gone overseas yet!
North of Nanaimo is limited to smaller companies, mainly float operators.
Qualicum airport has a flight school and KD Air. Courtenay/Campbell River airport has a flight school, the Campbell River spit has a few float operators, then north of that your getting more remote and probably wont find much till Port McNeil with some more float ops.
Theres not much mid island near Port Alberni (but you could visit Sproat Lake and see the Mars bombers) or west coast Tofino, but worth the visit just for outdoors type stuff.
If you do drive north of Nanaimo, take the old shoreline scenic highway, much nicer than the newer inland, maybe only 15-20 min longer.
Hope this helps.

When you're in Victoria, stop in at the Fox: the only strip club I ever saw with more women in the audience than men. (and no, it wasn't ladies night)
If you need a place to sleep, I liked the Dashwood Manor. It's a nice b+b, doesn't cost too much, and you might run into the avcanada member who lives there.
