Join John Lovelace in a Century Flight in 2009

Post by ANalli »

Between July 17, and July 26, 2009 we are holding a "Cross Canada Party" and you are cordially invited to attend.

The occasion is the 100th anniversary of the first flight in Canada of the Silver Dart in Baddeck, Nova Scotia. In honour of this historic celebration, John Lovelace, the recipient of the 2008 COPA President’s Award, aviation journalist and creator of “Wings Over Canada” is inviting aviators to join him on a historic 10 day cross country flight. The flight will leave in July 2009 from the shores of the Pacific Ocean at Boundary Bay Airport, fly to COPA convention in Calgary, and conclude 10 days later at the site of Alexander Bell's historic flight at Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Participants have the option to make the entire flight or to join up in any one of the 8 cities along the way.

The goal is to arrive in Nova Scotia with aircraft representing a cross-section of aviation in Canada today. All aircraft, from ultralights, to light singles and twins to high performance military aircraft are invited to join in the celebration.

Aviators and aviation enthusiasts from every province and territory are invited to join the party. Along the way we will be picking up aviation artifacts covering 100 years of flight from each region of Canada to present to the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, Nova Scotia at the conclusion of the flight.

The flight is intended to be a 10 day festivity where pilots and enthusiasts will share in new and old friendships set to the backdrop of our passion for aviation. The celebration will move cross-Canada from opening ceremonies at Boundary Bay to closing ceremonies in Nova Scotia.

We are working on an itinerary which is designed to accommodate VFR flight schedules in a Canadian summer. Between October, 2008 and April, 2009 our event coordinators will be detailing the cities and venues along the way and monthly updates will be forwarded by email.

Be a part of television history

The entire flight will form the backdrop of a historical television event of the 100 Year Flight, produced and hosted by veteran TV producer John Lovelace. The one-hour special will be a tribute to the aviators and aircraft that came together in the celebration and will stand as a lasting reflection of general aviation yesterday and today.

Registering

The cost of registering is $150.00 per entry to cover administration of the event only. While we will be recommending hotels and accommodation along the way, all bookings , transportation costs, food and refreshments, will be the responsibility of each registrant. This fee entitles you to a registration number and decals for your aircraft. It also includes a monthly email update preceding the flight, entry to all the events along the way, the official flight T-shirts and a certificate that you took part in the event. The fee is the same whether you make the entire flight or join in for just a single leg.

Century Flight UPDATE: Venues & Registration

Post by ANalli »

John Lovelace’s Century Flight celebrating the 100th anniversary of Canadian flight is very quickly growing to be about as big a national event as can be. The venue list is still being finalized but presently includes:

- Calgary (Springbank), AB for the COPA Convention
- Yellowknife, NT
- Brampton, ON (the ONLY stop in Southern Ontario and site of a major event)
- Gatineau, QC for a major open house and cooperative effort with the Hawk One team
- Fredericton, NB for a dedicated “Aviation Day” with visitors from across the Maritimes and the NE US
- Baddeck, NS the site of the first flight in Canada

We are also planning with the EAA for Canadian celebratory events at AirVenture 2009 in Oshkosk, WI where we will be stopping on the return trip after the Century Flight closing events at Baddeck.

Launching from Boundary Bay, BC on July 18th and ending at Baddeck on July 28th the Flight will involve 100-200 pilots joining the Flight from various points across the country, thousands of celebrants on the ground at the many planned venues, and millions watching on network television across North America.

Start your planning NOW to be a part of this historic event. Registrations are already under way and the response has been amazing. This will truly be an aviation event of a lifetime! Don’t miss out. Register SOON!

For information, visit www.JohnLovelace.com or download this flyer: http://www.PCAS.ca/centuryflightcnc3.pdf . Of course, you’re always welcomed to contact me for information as well.

Typical 416-er - wouldn't know Canadian geography outside the GTA if it came up and bit him in the a$$. ZBB is, if anything, on the shore of the Georgia Strait. Try CYAZ - that's on the shore of the Pacific Ocean - and a damn sight more scenic than ZBB.

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Typical Westcoaster - Harping on a Central Canadian for something that isn't necessarily wrong :). Classifications of waterbodies such Bays, Straights, Channels etc. are considered a part of the larger body of water that they are located in. For example, Georgian Bay (in Ontario) is part of Lake Huron. Therefore, you would be correct if you said that Wasaga Beach was on the Shores of Georgian Bay OR on the Shores of Lake Huron.
From Britannica Concise Encyclopedia:

Channel in the Pacific Ocean, southwestern Canada and northwestern U.S. Located between Vancouver Island, the southwestern mainland of British Columbia, and northwestern Washington state, it is 150 mi (241 km) long and 30 mi (28 km) at its widest. To the north the strait ends in a jumble of islands separating it from Johnstone and Queen Charlotte straits. The southern end is marked by the San Juan Islands of Washington and joins Haro Strait, forming a link in the Inside Passage sea route between Seattle, Wash., and Skagway, Alaska.

I posted this suggestion on the bush flying forum as a suggestion to better prepare bush pilots to become " real " pilots that can fit into the big city airport scene such as YYZ.
Stefan , maybe you could get some of these city boys some " real " pilot things so they won't feel so amateur as they move to and fro around the airplanes.

What would be real neat is baggage /flight bags they can drag around behind them...wheels may not work to good but maybe you could design some with tracks on them like a caterpillar bulldozer......that otta make e'm easier to drag through the mud in the summer and over the snow in the winter.
Anyone here think that would help these poor souls fit in with real pilots better?

It would be pretty cool to take part in this but what is even cooler is what the century of flight guys saw tonight at there SpringBank stop. COPA is having a convention at SpringBank this weekend and tonights get together ended off with a flight display at NIGHT that included PYROTECHICS. I usually find aerobatics really boring unless i'm the one actually flying them. After watching that, I think every airplane should be allowed to launch pyrotechnics off it's wing tips.

I think this is great that they are doing this. However I would not want to be the dude in the FSS building when all these planes come in. Thats alot of weekend warriors coming in at the same time! lol.. Good for them though! I bet It would be a blast flying across Canada!

I just hope no one gets hurt too badly.

100 private pilots trying to land at an uncontrolled
airport at the same time?

Please, people video this - both for youtube and
the TSB.

I'm sure that what they're doing is 100% legal, but
that doesn't make it safe. Most private pilots would
melt down with only 10 aircraft in the circuit.

And does anyone want to guess how well the
comm radio is going to work, with 100 long-winded
radio transmissions? And statistically speaking at
least one or two stuck mikes.

Perhaps I am being a pessimist, but I would appreciate
it if they would issue a NOTAM as they fly by, so
everyone else can stay on the ground.

I really hope I am wrong, and no one gets hurt.

P.S. I'm serious about the NOTAM suggestion.
