Re: have they created a new aircraft piston engine?
Sounds like a Lycoming O-320 to me. There were others besides the notorious H series that had 160HP and most Lycs run strong right to the end. Might have been topped too since some cylinders give you a power upgrade (and hopefully no oil consumption).
I (and many others) say an engine uses no oil if I don't have to add a quart between changes, even though the level does go down as even the best engines use a little oil.

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Sounds very similar to the PA 20/20 which I have seen advertised as an "Albatross" or something like that (can't remember exactly)with the wing & fuselage extensions but usually have the lyc. 0-360... 180hp. and are taildraggers not pushers. There was one flying up around Arctic Red River commercially on floats a while back. I saw it for sale in TAP at one time. I think most end up being uncertified which was the reason for this particular one being for sale for a substancial amount more than 40K. being that it was commercially registered. The 160 hp lycoming is nothing new if in fact that is what they are talking about and is a good engine as mentioned above. No oil in my terms and as I refer to my engine as "does not use oil" is changing the oil when it needs a litre. Very reliably at 25 and not more than 30 hrs. Oil and fuel are cheap. The rest of it is expensive. This might be a nice machine if it is what you are looking for. Just remember that a certified cub will always be worth more as well much more resaleable.

Doesn't an Apache (there's one hanging up in our local 'La Cage Au Sports') have 160 hp Lycs?

Apache, Twin Commanche, Beech Travelair, Grumman Cougar, Cessna 172N, Cherokee 160, Warrior 161, all have 160HP O-320s. Different dash numbers but same basic engine.

On that note, whatever happened to the Rotary Engine? Remember doing a paper about 12 years ago in Uni on the topic-- at the time a company that was developing the technology made it sound like it was just a few years away for aviation.

I think there was one called the "aero cam" (not the twin rotax 912 ultralight)
it used a swash plate and several pistons, similar to an old injector pump. I cant remember much more about it though.

.. rotary in the states uses mazda rotary engines in lots of homebuilts, but nothing certified.Panama Jack wrote:On that note, whatever happened to the Rotary Engine? It's too bad, cause they are a great engine.
We're all here, because we're not all there.
Re: have they created a new aircraft piston engine?
Its a piston change from the 150 Hp O-320 in most cubs. Put in the higher compression pistons and you get 160 hp.cubonfloats wrote: hell of an engine..new invention as far as i know...
