Since spring is the hiring season, maybe it will balance out to be a rather neutral hiring season rather then layoffs. They are talking that the recession should finish mid summer (best case) and worse case mid summer 2010.

Things are slowing down yes, but I don't think the music will stop completely unless the 705 outfits lays off or go bust. There are a lot of retirements over the next few years at AC and Jazz.

I'm curious as to the average age of pilots in Canada and when the retirement will hit full force. I hope all those retired baby boomers will want to spend their retirement days vacationing at far away destinations. Could be a good combination.

Did AC every lay off many pilots, I remember they where talking about big lay offs a few months ago. Was it smoke and mirrors to scare the union?

Rubber, not to sound skeptical, but that saying has been going around for as long as "there is an impending worldwide pilot shortage".

Let's keep this analogy in mind here folks: Company XYZ will have 1 of it's 3 pilot's retiring this Friday...a 33% retirement rate.....Wow, that's huge. On Monday, the same company hires his replacement. Holy S&$*, that's a 50% hiring rate....that's better than the 33% retirement rate! At the end of the day, it's only 1 pilot.

I know 7 captains working at AC, another 10 at WJ and not one of them is even close to retiring. Who are all these guys about to retire, does anyone have any numbers to back it up? Its a myth! The only way to increase pilot jobs is to lower oil prices, and the only way to do that is to get rid of OPEC. Oil has finally got to a decent price, guess what, OPEC decides they will cut supply to increase the price. Awesome, thanks!

The latest I have heard is yes AC still plans on going ahead with the 100 plus layoffs but there has been requests for over 60 leave of absences so the effect should be minimal. Easy to say I guess as long as you are not one of the 50 plus still getting a pink slip!!

"Is the music stopping" for the aviation field? All indicators are pointing in that direction. Those of you who fly in the north, providing essential services, are a little safer.

I was only basing my statement on some numbers posted a while back on the AC Forum. Someone posted a list of retirements over the next 10 years and they varied between 60 and 100+. Is this going to prevent the music from stopping? No! But there will be trickle hiring going on.... pending the economy!

..Hiring right now... The TSX dropped another ~8% today, closed at its lowest level in 4 years. Load factors are dropping around the world http://www.canada.com/victoriatimescolo ... 28c47d6d45 People are talking more and more of a recession. If it comes to pass, I'd be pretty sure that the hiring will halt in a hurry - rosy forecasts and new deliveries notwithstanding. As for retirements, if you were well-advised and had moved whatever retirement savings you had into more stable funds over the last few years, then you might be ok to retire; I'd be willing to wager that your average 58 year old, thinking/planning to pull the pin is probably having 2nd thoughts right now, and might well hang on for another year or two until the whole mess is sorted out...

'Course, no-one has ever accused me of being an optimist :)

Asking a pilot about what he thinks of Transport Canada, is like asking a fire hydrant what does he think about dogs.

Seriously guys, leave Iceman alone.

He's a pilot who's not afraid to speak his mind about our economy. That's hard to find these days.

Iceman, do you have any stocks that I should pay attention to?

It's nice to see that you've finally come out of hiding ICE. How are your year 3 Economics classes going? As I've mentioned, it would be nice to hear your opinion (read what your Profs are teaching). I'd like to see how far academia is behind the power curve in this challenging economic environment. Quite frankly, I use you as an indicator, one of many. By all means please post your favorite stock picks, so that after proper DD, I will in all probability, short them.

B-rad, I suggest you re-read this entire thread. I won't cut and paste some of ICE's predictions. At best his predictions were inaccurate, at worst he was dead wrong. As I've said before, Kelownapilot, followed closely by Four1oh had the most accurate predictions.
