The IOC awards the olympics to a city; Not a province or country. Vancouver is the only city in the province with the resources, infrastructure and services capable of hosting such a large event, and Whistler is the nearest ski venue with suitable facilities. As it was, the distance between the two was a major hurdle to overcome in the bid for the games. The IOC would not have awarded the games to Vancouver if events were to be scattered across the province. The original bid was for Vancouver-Whistler, but the IOC told them it had to be a single city, hence, Vancouver.

Then why is it Vancouver-Whistler and not Vancouver-Grouse Mountain, or Vancouver-Cypress Bowl, or Vancouver-Mount Seymour.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Soon, we will strike. The freedom-loving people of Alberta are gathering with our un-registered firearms, soon to launch the inevitable attack on the Socialist republic of BC, liberating their people from the repressive air-tax. We will subsume their fields, hills and lakes into the new Alberta territory, giving all Albertans and New-Albertans Lebensraum.*
Stop laughing-bastards- this platform will get me four, five thousand votes easy, next Provincial election.....
needs a little tweaking, mebbe.......

Hey we'd get rid of the PST too! I'm already on Mountain Time and surrounded by caution plates, could be a good thing.
Just make sure you organize it before oil heads too much further south. Otherwise:

It's not Vancouver-Whistler, it Vancouver period. If you know anything about skiing (downhill or nordic), you know why the north shore mountains are playing a limited role in hosting olympic events.

Ns doing great, probably going to be passing more of the flying to me so he can 'retire' (he'll never stop flying). R could be better but still hanging in there. Coffee's always on if you stop by.

Added to which, now Vancouver city is being asked to step in and 'loan' $100 million to a company to complete the athletes' village. I wonder how much of this will get paid back??

You know what pisses me off about the Vancouver Olympics, the fact that every whiny bastard is trying to get a piece of the action. It's the Vancouver Games not the freaking Okanagan games or the Fort St John Games, Why is the symbol of the Vancouver games a frigging Inukshuk??? This is the Vancouver Olympics not the Iqaluit games, And WTF are those mascots, did a boat from Japan with Peakachew dolls run a ground on the west coast? I support Vancouver getting the games, but if it means selling out to Ottawa to get money for otherwise needed infrastructure upgrades that if we where Quebec would have been handed over and in a second. And whats all this about Whistler they get the bobsled, luge and downhill Skiing and Cross Country events thats it. Vancouver inlcluding Richmond and the shore mountains have everything else.

Oh I'm sure Quebec will be whining soon enough when they see the money going west. "Where's our money? We only just finished paying off Olympic Stadium!"

Re: Interesting developements in B.C.
"The Games provides an opportunity for people to come together and target something very tangible that's having a very visible impact."
"This coming together of groups will help lay the groundwork for a more connected protest movement in Canada in the future."
It is very interesting because there is other developments going on that we can learn from. The Oil and Gas companies' pipelines incidents tell us that very serious destruction has probably occured but it is kept quiet and people are unheard.
I don't think the government is going to protect people. They have made revenue sharing agreements with First Nations but this is to pay them off and let the companies continue.
Canada and USA needs to stop pursuing Oil and Gas interests. This is how we can lead other countries to change their interests as well.
If you been hearing anything about the Arctic sovereignty issues you might have heard that the countries involved are interested in oil drilling in that region. I think it's not fair for them to ask us to be the "Leaders on action against climate change" but meanwhile they are just threatening us and making plans to find Oil, like Russia is doing. I listened to Robert Huebert speak at the Round table on the Environment,
20th anniversary and he said we need to make treaties with other countries starting with the Arctic. This is something to bring up at the G7 meetings.
