Great job, lots of skill and luck, I'd wager. I'm curious to know if they had the gear up or down at splashdown.

Re: U.S. Airways Jet Down in Hudson River
Just bloody amazing! The captain walked through the airplane and confirmed everybody got out. I'm raising a glass to that pilot....right NOW!!!

I'm glad this accident had a good outcome, and some of the criticisms of Airbus have once again proven to be incorrect.

Does anyone think the plane will ever be used again? It looks like it's in pretty good shape.
Re: U.S. Airways Jet Down in Hudson River
A whole career of living the dream and bragging about being a pilot, and then...bang. You get the next 20 seconds to prove whether or not you're as good as you think you are. I think this chap just joined the rarified ranks of the few who snatched victory from the jaws of certain catastrophy. And walking through the plane ensuring he was the last one off is the final bit of old school class that says "I'm in charge and it's my responsibility" that we should all aspire to.Doc wrote:Just bloody amazing! Hell of a job.

Don't even bring that crap into this thread.MichaelP wrote:Airbus are built strong... would a Boeing have survived?

A tip of the hat to the entire crew! A job well done.
Putting money into aviation is like wiping before you poop....it just don't make sense!

Re: U.S. Airways Jet Down in Hudson River
If the guesses at it being a double bird strike are correct, it sounds like he just flew his biggest glider yet! (though it may still have had engine power. We'll wait for NTSB to tell us that in a few years...Captain Sullnbergers bio.

Isn't it interesting that situations where an airliner has glided to a landing have all involved people with glider experience? Both here, AC at Gimli and Transat in the Azores.

Yet we seem to have a generation of pilots who turn their collective noses up at stick and rudder skills... Wonder what this will turn out like when all the old school Capt's are dead and gone?
Glad everyone made it out OK... Nice to read a positive story about one of these incidents for a change.
That said, there is the potential for one hell of a fuel spill... wonder what they're doing about it?

Great save. I'm just wondering... was this picture taken before or after? A day like that'd take what's left of my hair straight to Grey.

Quote: “A witness said they were "Canada geese"...
President Bush is still the President, we'll have to hope that he doesn't see this attack as being by Canadian suicide geese and invade Canada.”
Hasn’t Steve Harper already apologised to the world for Canada geese? If not, here comes another Canadian government apology, this time to disadvantaged passengers, along with a big hand out from the Canadian taxpayers!
Who will be left to apologise to?

Hats off to all involved. That being said, I'm pretty F'n sick of watching "Larry King", "Dr. Sanjai Gupta", and "Dr. Phil" weigh in on the matter.....good ol' CNN.....

Can Avcanada as a group send this crew a congratulatory telegram or something?

Why? If the hull is intact I think the wings likely are...although the engines may be missing. I might be more concerned about water from the Hudson getting into the airplanesky's the limit wrote:That said, there is the potential for one hell of a fuel spill... wonder what they're doing about it?

I had the same thought as soon as I saw it floating right side up, it will be interesting to see if the engines sheared off as they went into the water. Why? If the hull is intact I think the wings likely are...although the engines may be missing.
For sure this crew answers the question about how good airline crews are in an emergency......looks like this one was one that the industry can be more than proud of.
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Re: U.S. Airways Jet Down in Hudson River
Its a miracle indeed! One of the few heavy jets ever landed in the water without breaking up. I noted flaps and slat devices in deployed position during some TV shots. Awesome.
Job very well done, and just a few wet feet....
I 'm going to offer to finish off this guy's float rating for free at the Amigo Airways Seaplane Academy. He already has the deadstick landing part down just fine.
Kudos US Airways.
