Re: Hicks & Lawrence
The accomidations are good, but dependent on how clean and respectful your fellow pilots are.
Hours will range from 150hrs in a bad season to 450 in a great season.
I don't remember the pay(i BD).
They had bonus' last year.
As detection you get the minimum 3 days off in 30 and 13 in 90. In bad weather times, you may get more.
The bases are dryden, geraldton, chapleau, sudbury, and timmins(detection). It's likely that you will be sent off base a few times during the season(Red lake, thunder bay, armstrong, earlton, or others).

So I take it there is no planned break or vacation time, it would be just mechanical and weather days?
Is there a bidding process for bases?

Re: Hicks & Lawrence
It's a summer job. How much vacation time do you think you'll need? The way things are going now, if I was a low time guy building twin PIC, I'd strap my ass to the airplane from May to September! Just let me have a relief tube, and a phone to call out for pizza!HORUNNER wrote:So I take it there is no planned break or vacation time, it would be just mechanical and weather days?

What a great job for a retired guy. VFR all summer. Golf in Arizona all winter!
Re: Hicks & Lawrence
Don't get any ideas Doc. There are enough of us old cranky bastards in Dryden already!!

Re: Hicks & Lawrence
The job itself is a vacation. It'll probably be the most fun job you'll ever have and you'll come out with some decent time and lifelong friends.
The year I was there we did about 250 hours, and that was considered low. The pay was ok, there were a couple of bonus' as well. I think it was $500/week, plus bonus at the end and per diems for off base operations, as well as accomodations fully paid for.

Doc Doc Doc,
is there anything you dont have a opinion about . . .
I dont need the time off it is a short season anyway, just know of a place where they did fire detection and their summer was "30 days 1 week 30 days 1 week 30 days".
So my question was only that, a seeking of info.
It does sound like a great gig
The only experience I have is a friends job in BC they had late starts, something about cold mornings and long nights something about being to close to the vendor

Guess not. Thought I gave it a pretty positive review. I'd do it. Grow a sense of humour. I don't have a real positive opinion of your opening remarks.....you could maybe apply?HORUNNER wrote:Doc Doc Doc,is there anything you dont have a opinion about . . .

Re: Hicks & Lawrence
Let me see if I have this right. A job that starts in the spring, and ends in the fall? Free accommodations? A bonus if you stick around? 1000 TT, 100 twin PIC? I've got way more than that! And, I like to hibernate all winter. Is this long enough to qualify for EI? I can cash EI cheques while I hibernate! Sandy? Where do I sign?
The best "Brown Bear" of them all!

Re: Hicks & Lawrence
So could anyone remember approximate $$ for detection and bird dog positions?
PM if you like...

Having trouble reaching ATC? Squak 7500
Re: Hicks & Lawrence
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they changed recently (for the worse). Still a great first gig though.
