Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal
A Continental flight operated by Colgan Air crashed this evening at Buffalo/Niagra International .... apparently a Dash-8 Q400 ... 49 dead in total including one on the ground as the plane crashed into a house. Pilot reported mechanical issues prior to the crash. Plane hit 5nm short of the runway ... very sad.

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal
Approach cleared 3407 to the beacon for RWY 23, then handed them off to twr freq and . That was their last communication....
Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal
The file wasn't streaming anything from tower at that time, so not sure if they made contact at all with them. In other parts of the file you can hear KBUF tower though.e300d wrote:

I see the Continental Q400's at YYZ all the time.... I guess until about a year ago they were using the E145 jets on those routes...(USA - yyz)
Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal
I was just listening to the 0330Z Liveatc archive and approach had another Colgan Q400 on approach.
Approach advised that company Q400 went down 5 nm short of runway....Approach did say that Colgan 3407 was switched over to tower freq. 3407 never made a call to tower. They lost his (3407) transponder and that was it..

the 0330z mp3 states that they never contacted tower at all while the next Colgan flight is setting up for the approach
Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal
When they are cleared for the ILS you can hear the stress in the voice of the female pilot when she reads back the clearance.
Radar imaging shows they flew through a nasty cell just a few minutes before they were cleared for the approach.

I did a quick browse through the pprune and it sounds like a few flights reported ice on the descent.
Not speculating. Just sharing.
Condolenses.

Tail Icing ??? Sound like a tail stall during a change of flaps setting resulting in a lost of control no other faillure beside a wing comming off could explain losing control once established on the ILS in descent weather 5 miles back.
Very sade

Re: Continental Flt 3407 Crash at Buffalo/Niagra Intr'nal
very sad indeed. more trouble with the q400 could be very bad for bombardier. looking forward to hearing the details.

I was thinking the same thing, right where you'd be putting some extra workload on the autopilot by selecting flaps and intercepting localizer. If you're already iced up and the autopilot unexpectedly disengages it could be a problem.Tail Icing ??? Sound like a tail stall during a change of flaps setting resulting in a lost of control no other faillure beside a wing comming off could explain losing control once established on the ILS in descent weather 5 miles back.
Sorry to speculate, I know some people get annoyed with that.

My thoughts and prayers are with my fellow dash pilots today and all their passengers.

I can't find anything to support your statement of reported mechanical issues.Localizer wrote: Pilot reported mechanical issues prior to the crash. Plane hit 5nm short of the runway ... very sad.

The crash site is still too hot for the NTSB to start an investigation and we already have people speculating on the cause. That is very sad.Localizer wrote:Pilot reported mechanical issues prior to the crash. Plane hit 5nm short of the runway ... very sad.
Let's just pray for the victims (including two fellow pilots and two FAs) and wait for some factual information before assuming anything. If for no other reason, just out of respect for the crew.
