My guess is that more than half the airlines mentioned in this thread contain nothing but pilots burning time, hoping they can get on with AC someday.

Keyword.. NOT ALL (I',e sure there comes a point when it's obvious not to look elsewhere), but...

And another note for cargo: rarely flying on holidays. No domestic cargo on long weekends, Christmas, New Years, Good Friday, Thanksgiving, etc etc.

Some days that may traditionally be heavy pax ops are quiet cargo ops days.

I keep having this nightmare that I am an AC pilot. Then I wake up. Phew.

Cargo dog,

That totally slipped my mind. I've been home for every major holiday for the last 4 years, unless I volunteer (for overtime of course) to do special trips. Cargo is great. It's also a huge money maker. When Air Canada was flying around in those 747's, the only thing making money was the cargo on board. Many airlines have removed a couple rows to increase leg room (so they tell the general public) , but it really increases cargo payload!

Cheers!

What are you, like, 12? I have colleagues at AC and after all the uncertainty, all the bs, the creditor protection, and the big pay rollbacks....they still have a better schedule, paycheck, and lifestyle than any of my buddies at WJ. So why did my colleagues go to WJ? Um, because that's who called them maybe? (Hint: as much as you'd hate to believe it, paycheck and lifestyle ARE related.)

Flying the -67 a few days a month for 140k/year....make the nightmares STOP!! ROTFLMAO.

Certainly the times they are a-changin'...but WJ ain't exactly the end-all be-all, paricularly in light of the latest financials. It's easy to say that everyone loves WJ when they've been the only game in town. We'll just have to see if that remains true when AC/Jazz starts hiring again, particularly if WJ's growth remains static and the company remains unprofitable - both unknown variables to be sure but not out of the realm of possible. Making 40-63k/year in the right seat with no possibility of advancement, no profit-share (no profit), and worthless stock options just might make AC seem not quite as nightmarish...just food for thought as you make sasrcastic comments a la Clive...

I agree with BRiZE - there are a lot of guys biding their time. The true test of an airline's ability to retain pilots happens when the industry is doing well, not poorly. If and when the Canadian industry ever picks up again, THAT will be the true test of whether WJ's vaunted "Team Spirit" will be enough to keep guys from chasing dollars.

Given EVERYTHING I've seen of pilots picking principles over money...I somehow doubt that teal koolaid will cut it.

ok, ok, I would agree, with Canadian not far behind. But I guess I'm talking about airlines we could still actually work for today.

From what I understand, if you start at Air Canada, you will go directly to the RJ. Not exactly what I would call big iron! Don't forget that the formula used to pay airline pilots has a lot to do with the weight of the airplane. It would take years and years to see a "big" airplane and the "big" paycheck to match.

Cheers!

1) AC
Been in business for 70 years, voted worlds safest airline, big fleet with global industry pay and working conditions, Worldwide destinations, 120K per year pension upon retirement.

2) KFC
Been around long enough to demonstrate stability, Great pay, Cargo or Pax, your choice.

3) Air Transat
They stay out of the spotlight and instead of slandering their competition, just slowly grow. Obviously stand behind their employees as demonstrated with the Azores incident.

4) Somewhere other than in Canada. A job at WestJet, Jetsgo etc would be more of a short term job rather than a career.( a 737 does not constitute "Heavy Iron" as some people call it.) Would rather go overseas.

737 is heavy iron?!! Maybe if one comes from a 1900 or DH8 it would seem so. Nice airplane but not Heavy.

I would have to agree with Boeing, cargo. From what I hear from friends that fly it. Cargo is fantastic. And the $ is the same if not more then airlines. Plus cargo doesn't care if you crank and bank to 45 degrees plus.
SOCIABLE!!!!!

Modern: yes, by any standard. Well, not the -200. Heavy? Compared to the Navajo maybe. Some of the WJ captains with real heavy experience refer to the 737 as a "regional jet". So it's all a matter of perspective I guess.

RAC 4.1.1

Group 1 (Heavy) All aircraft with a certified max takeoff weight of 300,00 lbs or more

Group 2 (Medium) Aircraft certified for a max weight between 12,500 and 300,00 lbs

Group 3 (Light) All aircraft certified up to 12500 lbs inclusive.

B737-700 154,000 lbs without live TV installs, with 153,690. Its a medium. Doesn't even handle or ride like a heavy at all. But they are new with a crazy technology mix ( thanks South West) and fly straight for now. Not a bad little buggy to bounce around in at all.

As for the best airline ever in Canada Wardair by far. Now its just the one that can offer stable employment. But if ya want the $$ AC by far. WJ is a great place to work sched is good and OT if ya want it. But as you all know $$$ just a little bit WEAK! As for SG or Canjet don't know anything about them other than heresay and s@#t that we have all heard.

Hey Tomajet the freight may not mind but the CP might at MAE we flew the airplane just like you would if you had pass. in the back. FedEx liked it that way.

Aaaahhh Wardair Provided a great service for good value, what a novelty!

The aviation landscape would be very different if Wardair was around today!

Having said that, since the AC/CDN merger, I have flown with many ex Wardair guys and they tell me that working for Max was no picnic! It was their fellow crew members that made the working conditions tolerable and the job fun.

Wardair may have been great and AC at one time may also have been glorious but today only Westjet offers a rewarding and lucrative career flying large aircraft.

Jaques,
You are correct regarding working for Max.....it was the staff that made it great.

Tryme,
You must be one of the brain washed people form WJ. First you call a 737 a "heavy" then you call them "large". Are you not aware there are larger and heavier aircraft then a 737 in the skies around the world?
Do a google search buddy...type in "B747" or "A340" then come back when you can get it right.

And your extensive background with which other airlines qualifies you to make this statement?

Being part of a Ra, Ra cult like corporate culture may be great for you, but not for everyone. Those things that make a career rewarding for me, WJ is not able to offer.

I like the opportunity to live and work in the city that I want. I also want the opprtunity to fly 'large' a/c. WJ can't give me either of those things.

Define lucrative?
