Porter airlines on the island
Just hoping to get a little feedback on this company. I have read a couple of articles in AMU and they seemed very positive. Have any AME's worked there or know anyone who has? Shifts? benefits? pay? Any chance of an endorsement on the Dash 8 without having to wait 5 years? Any other feedback would be greatly appreatiated.
Re: Porter airlines on the island
From what i hear their a top knock company !! seem to have a good think going
Re: Porter airlines on the island
They offered me $22/hr licenced. I laughed. Great management team, but $22/hr...yeah right.
Re: Porter airlines on the island
well~~if you don't have any Dash 8 Q series endorsement . 22 or 23 is all you can get at Air Canada Jazz, too.
Re: Porter airlines on the island
thats sad! not leaving a $30/hr job on weekday 8-5 for that! I dont know why type experience is so important. Thats what manuals are for. You either know this shit or you dont!
Re: Porter airlines on the island
Wow.You either know this shit or you dont
I am not worthy. I am not worthy.
Re: Porter airlines on the island
Those were my thoughts exactly. I don't know how they expect to find/attract talent for what they want to pay..qa guy wrote:thats sad! not leaving a $30/hr job on weekday 8-5 for that! I dont know why type experience is so important. Thats what manuals are for

Re: Porter airlines on the island
You realize they only get paid while they fly, that's gate to gate. They fly about 80 hours a month, that's $5527.20, which is $66,326.40 per year. Not huge money.mech1 wrote:a/c flight attendants top scale is 69.09hr plus per diem....thats after 8yrs with company.....that was thier negotiated wage since 2001...

Re: Porter airlines on the island
Actually I think that's pretty good! They only have to log less than half the hours per year that I do to make aprox. the same wage. They work 80hrs/month , I work 173 hours and they make about the same.conehead wrote:You realize they only get paid while they fly, that's gate to gate. Does anyone know if they hire apprentices and if they do how much do they make?

Yes, they hire apprentices, Its the highest apprentice wage Ive heard aside from working in NWT. everyone who has joined the company with a license has gotten the course within a month of being there. From what I hear it is a good environment, good shifts, night and day. The Q400 is a pretty interesting aircraft. Myself I would take a bit of a pay cut to be happy while at work, I know a lot of guys at Jazz and AC that are miserable, hate their jobs and are useless mechanics because of it, so as far as job satisfaction goes, its pretty subjective, take the ferry over to the island and check it out yourself.., from a friend that works there, its a fast growing company (surprising since every other company is dumping staff) , great aircraft , lots of flight benefits and other benefits. Pay is going up and a new 11 gate terminal is almost complete. Working on the island with a view of the city like that sure beats the hell out of the Pearson "compound" too.
In regards to you either knowing the stuff or not ....wow.. , it takes time to figure out an airplanes quirks are quarks thats what a course does, gives you some tips and troubleshooting short cuts. everyone knows you learn more working on the airplane , but the course helps a lot.

Re: Porter airlines on the island
I used to work the Ramp at YTZ and we had to groom the A/C at night so I got a good rapport with the AME's working the Night Shifts.
Pretty much all of them loved working there. Easy to get to, everyone is pretty easy to get a long with.
Didn't get into salary but if I would totally apply there myself.
There's nothing like being able to Streetcar from your Apartment to work in about 30 minutes or less. The Q400 is a great machine too.

Re: Porter airlines on the island
Does anyone have anything current to share on Porter with regards to working as an AME at YTZ base? In particular: schedule, training/advancement/ACA, working conditions(subjective, I know) and of course, compensation?
Thanks

Re: Porter airlines on the island
Porter is a good place to work, I worked there 2 years before I got out of aviation all together. The schedule for the maintenance team in YTZ is 4 on/4 off, the shifts are 12hrs (mostly nights). Porter has its issues, but most shops do. Most of Porters issues revolve around growing pains. They do things the right way there, no corner cutting, etc...
The starting pay for ACA AME is approx. $28/hr. If you don't have the Q400 endorsement you can expect a course within the first year, maybe sooner. Not sure what they would bring in an Non-ACA AME at, but you could expect $23-25/hr range until you get type rated. The pay scale is about a dollar raise every year and tops out at $32-33/Hr range (maybe $34) after 5 years.
The Q400 is a good plane to work on, and with its popularity growing it would be a great addition to the resume. The flight benefits are good and the health benefits are on par. There is profit sharing there, and from what I understand there was a payout this year.
I'd think you'd like it.

Thanks for the post, Troubleshot.
It all sounds attractive other than the sizeable pay cut I would have to take as an otherwise experienced ACA AME but without significant Dash-8 time. I guess one would have to expect that to a degree, going from corporate to airline no matter where you're looking.
It has raised a hint of concern for me that they always have a posting for Ames on their site. The low starting wage would explain that though.
As you say though, gaining experience and rating on the Q400 has real value in itself. Not to mention not hating one's workplace!

Re: Porter airlines on the island
Yeah the corporate gig's usually pay quite a bit better than the airlines. I personally liked the fast pace of line maintenance, I never worked in the corporate world but I would imagine it is a little more laid back.
I was hired as an out-base AME so as far as that goes, I had a pretty sweet gig. The only reason I left is because I was commuting back and forth to work and that was to hard on family life....otherwise I'd still be there. I think if you are truly interested, apply. I think if you spoke with management regarding pay, etc...they would be more helpful in laying out your options.
I know they pretty much keep that posting for AME's on their website 365 days a year so I don't think it is an indicator of anything. I miss working with the guys there, good bunch of fellas.
Good luck!
