Some pics from my trip to Halifax last summer. The orange plane is a fake Fokker F7, they used it for the movie we were shooting. I don't know if I can release those picture since the movie's not out yet, so I won't say the name of the movie. If you want to know it PM me.

I flew DVG many years ago on skis at Manic 5. What a small world bud!
Thanks for posting those wonderful shots and keep 'em coming!

I don't fly a swamper but this thread is such an awesome photo resource that I really want to add a few photos I took lastnight, Feb 13 in the ice crystals and blowning snow.

I think your Junkers is a Fokker F-7.
The JU 52 is low wing and corrugated aluminum construction.
Interesting none the less.
This is the F-7: http://www.aviastar.org/air/holland/fokker_f-7.php

Re: Pic from a swamper
Once again, awesome pics STL!
You make me almost want to be a rotary guy
Please forgive my fixed wing nievety here, but I don't see any tail rotors there, this confuses me. Is that some kind of bleed air or exhaust outlet on the back of the tail boom? I realize what a ridiculous guess that is, but it's all I've got!

Flying airplanes is easy, you just need to PAY ATTENTION. Finding a good job on the other hand takes experience, practice, and some serious talent.
Re: Pic from a swamper
some helo's have no tail rotor, One's even been designed without a boom. I have no idea how they work, STL will have to enlighten us.
Re: Pic from a swamper
this is the NOTAR technology about 10 years old and applied first in civilian choppers on the hughes 500 where blades are replaced by airflow coming out of the tail and controlled by shutters.

Actually it's closer to 30 years old I think.302sc wrote:this is the NOTAR technology about 10 years old and applied first in civilian choppers on the hughes 500 where blades are replaced by airflow coming out of the tail and controlled by shutters.
If I won the lottery tonight, the ink wouldn't even be dry on the check yet, and I would have one of those 600's on order.

Thanks Senior P,
MD Helicopters has been pushing this NOTAR (No Tail Rotor...) technology to many users, Police, Air Medical, Military, for some time now, I'm sure somebody can Google the exact time frame. Eurocopter uses the "Fenstron" technology, and MD has gone the way of ducted air.
Simply put, housed in the big fat tail boom is a large diameter fan which, like all tail rotors, is driven off the engine power. It's a cold air system that takes a large volume of air and vectors it around via the drum like housing on the end of the boom. Considering that a very high percentage of any helicopter's noise signature is from the T/R, this helps keeps the audible footprint very low. The added benefit for working the bush is, you need not worry as much about touching bushes/trees/stumps, with the tail - although it is still good airmanship not to.
There are a few drawbacks on the system, and as the 520 and 600 are the only two I've flown, I can only comment on them. The MD 900 Explorer was designed with the NOTAR system from scratch, it may work better. The 600 is basically a typical wonder of American engineering in my estimation, ie. take a 500, cut it in half, add a plug, bolt on an engine that's too big for the existing bay, cut out the doors to that bay, ad FADEC, six extra inches to the blades, and bolt on a NOTAR system with about 300 little tiny aero bits to make it fly straight... The 520 isn't much better. The 900 I think is quite a different kettle of fish. (The 600 actually uses the 530F's running gear - tranny, blades, engine)
All that said, the 600 is quite a piece of work. It is FAST, and I mean fast. It'll quite easily going steaming through VNE in STRAIGHT AND LEVEL flight at only 75% power... That being 155kts. While that sounds sexy, it's actually quite the opposite. The machine will enter retreating blade stall very easily, and that is never all that enjoyable. There are a few other unique flight characteristics, and at our company - all pilots having considerable 500 time - the transition isn't too bad. Coming from a Bell or Eurocopter directly into a 600 would be a large transition as the 500 takes a whole different approach to fly it to its design limit - things you'd never do in a Bell. I know of at least two companies who's had a few issues with the 600 for that reason.
Anyway, I'm glad you guys like the shots, here's another:

I wonder if the doors close any better than the old 500's?

So when is the Amelia Earhart movie coming out anyway?C-GOER wrote:Some pics from my trip to Halifax last summer. The orange plane is a fake Junker 52, they used it for the movie we were shooting. Re: Pic from a swamper
They told me the movie was to be released somewhere in October 2009.
It was quite a nice trip back there, I was flying the 206 doing take-off and landing in Halifax's Harbor. I had another day of shooting in the Stonehurst area, taking-off in the Atlantic ocean. Great load of fun. Fantastic team, I actually met Hilary Swank
I'm supposed to be credited as wireframe plane pilot, since my cessna will be replaced by a computer created "Fokker F7". In fact, they only used a real plane in order to catch shot of the water flying behind while taking-off and landing. They said generating animated water is way complicated and doesn't give good result on TV. Can't wait to see the movie.

Re: Pic from a swamper
Good stuff, that would be a pretty sweet job. You should try and log the hours on the Fokker instead of the 206, just be sure to leave the whole "wireframe" thing out...
