What is this place like to live in? Buddy of mine says it's the best place in the world, guess I want some other opinions
Is cost of living high? I see real estate is cheap, but no idea on electricity, food, etc...thanks Oh, are apt rentals easy to come by, & how much can I expect to pay for a bachelor or 1 bdrm? Thanks!!

Re: sioux lookout
hmmm.....your buddy needs to get out more. Or has some permanent beer goggles.

Check out the MLS for real home prices, used to be high $ for 'shacks'. Most guys share whatever apartment they can find. If you like the bush; fishing, hunting, boating, sledding etc it's not to bad.

coolame, where abouts are you now, or where are you from? everything is relative to what you know and have experience with...

Re: sioux lookout
I'm down here in YYZ right now, not really liking the city too much...I love to hunt/quad etc. But I also used to work in Thompson MB in the '80s and THAT didn't work out. Just trying to find a place sort of in the middle, ya know? Not too busy, not too slow

Re: sioux lookout
Hmm. I would say Thompson is more like a cross between YYZ and Sour Outlook. Some guys like it there, but you won't if you like going to the movies, or a decent cup of coffee. Well, there's a Robin's Doughnuts there, I think...
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself
Re: sioux lookout
Its a great place to be in the summer, if you like getting out and doing things like fishing hiking camping WHY. Not sure what its like in the winter but I could imagine much the same as YTH. All in all if you could live in YTH YXL wont be much different for you. Well there arent any bars, theaters, or many girls but you make it what it is. I was placed there for a month a couple summers ago and loved it got out hiking on my days off and fishing with my landlord. If you take the job there dont commit to any accom before you get there. Get to town and look around, I found a one bed basement suite on the water for 625. Buy a quad to make both sumer/winter more interesting.
Go and have fun all the pilots stick together there and it is very much a good place to be.

Anyone can do it, I just do it better ! ! !
Re: sioux lookout
what was it about thompson that didn't work out? the 'city' or the job? sioux might not be as far north, but its still north. as its been said, some people really like it. some really don't. i have a few friends there (both in and outside aviation) and they are really happy there. i've had friends that really don't like it and couldn't wait to leave. an open mind will go a looong way

YTH-It was the city I didn't like. Too many,,,,ummm,,,"social problems." I don't want to get back into that kind of situation-drunks walking out in front of you in traffic, going to the liquor store and not making it back to your car with all your booze lol.

Re: sioux lookout
like doc driver said...you might not like sioux lookout so very much then. i understand what you mean about thompson, and the thing to keep in mind, is that sioux is even smaller, with the ratio of um, pilots to uh, social problems is just as bad if not worse...

Re: sioux lookout
I lived in YXL for 3 years with my wife and we had the best time of our lives there. Sioux is awsome if you like fishing and are of the outdoor type. I would move back tomorrow if I could commute. My land-lord there owns half of sioux so send me a pm for contact info.

Sounds like Thompson has a pilot infestation;)coolame wrote:YTH-It was the city I didn't like. Too many,,,,ummm,,,"social problems." Damn I have lived in Syox since 1976 and still call it home -- I love the place and can't get there enough -- mind you owning a place on the lake is what makes it -- in fact I'm sitting in wpg waiting for the JV ride in the am --
U can't compare it to Thompson -- not even close -- and just think I'm practically Doc's neighbour --

If you cant handle YTH, you won't like YXL. YXL is smaller with bigger "social issues" .
If I were trying to find something in the middle, I'd try Whitehorse. Big town/small city, northern charm. What company are you working for or are you trying to find a gig?

Re: sioux lookout
Well, I was working for one of the bigger players here in YYZ, now looking for something else since my a$$ got laid off. I'm an AME but have been in the office for the last little while which seems to work against me apparently...no one wants an AME with office experience, hmm!!!! Perhaps they will think I'm too picky
What other operators are in whitehorse besides CanadianNorth? (who isn't hiring right now) I like the outdoors, I just need to find someone decent to work for in a good locale...

Re: sioux lookout
I lived in "Sewer Lookout" in 1991. Worked for a great guy there. Tudhope. Good operator. Just about got murdered one evening at the "Sunset"?? because somebody wanted the pool table I was using. No Robin's donuts back then either..
Bums abounded at the time. I lived at Lysol Beach, so not too many people bothered me. It was a nice spot by the train bridge. The town sewer outlet released at dusk every night, spreading shredded condoms all over. If you went swimming (upstream of the outlet), you had to wear shoes, because of all the rusted out lysol cans, and broken glass. But I liked it. I wonder if old Hank Ogemaw has made it past 100?
If you like hunting, try out Northwestern Air @ Fort Smith, they have a large fleet, bush and sked, and are good operators. The town also has a coffee shop and golf course..

Drinking lots of coffee lately, at a nice safe jungle desk, wishing I were flying......
Re: sioux lookout
Hey Coolame. I assume you are an ame and will be working there year round. I flew there for a summer. By the way, I live in a northern community (approx 12,000 people and I really like it there) If you like chicken, there are at least 8 outlets. Social hangouts, 2 bars downtown - no reservations required if you get my gist. 1 overpriced grocery store. The best part of the store is they use the wall and parking lot on friday nights for a drive-in movie theater. Bring your own chicken. 1 beer store, 1 liquor store. Things to do: Blueberry festival in the summer (usual bs smalltown festival) drive the road to pickle lake at night to hit bears or moose. Nice but short 9 hole golf course. Fishing for pickeral at frog rapids in the spring, if you don't have a boat. Miles long walking/biking trail (paved). All Voyageur staff bunk together at the airport. Don't know about Wasaya. The metro air ambulance guys are too tired to go out.
If your doing maintenance for the float guy, you should get lots of cylinder overhauls. He's proud of the fact that he will wind up his 185 for over 6 minutes full bore trying to get off the water, then turn around and do it again coming back. Busy airport.
It's better than Pickle lake, shitier than red Lake, which at least does have a bit more of everything to offer. Would I live in Sioux Lookout year round? Only if I were desperate. Seasonally, only if I had to.

Re: sioux lookout
Yellowknife is nothing like YTH or YXL. It is a small city, with "big-city" character and flavour. It has all the services and chains and franchises that you would want or need, and its social problems and interactions with the local people are the same as any other place in the shield. The population is about 19,000.
Recreationally it is a fantastic place to live, and the outdoors and environment are the same as Thompson and The Soo. You can lose your identity there, or join any number of interest groups or cliques to suit your own soul. There is an increasingly strong French presence, and 2 FM radio stations broadcast in French.
It is more expensive than The Soo and about the same as Thompson. Food is priced about 10% higher than Edmonton. Everything is available. There is a wide range or eating out places and styles, to go with the wide range of "dinner-out" prices.
I have visited both YXL and YTH on many occasions, and stayed in both for several days; I live in YZF.

Just to clear things up I did not say the best place in the world, I said if you like the outdoors(sledding, hunting, fishing, and so on) its the place to be. As said above Voyaguer does have a medevac base up here for ornge but the contract is only for another year and then Ornge's new PC12's will be taking over. Bugs are plentiful in the summer months. It's only as good as you make it.

Re: sioux lookout
I live here now, it is what you make it for sure. The grocery store costs too much, gas costs a lot too but being so small you don't burn a lot of it. Learn to BBQ and cook for your self because everywhere in town sucks to eat out at IMHO until the summer places start to open. As for good coffee you in fact can get great coffee at Roy Lane on Front st. and the airport. Nice little independent store. Rentals are tight and expensive. Buying is either crap or nice places for way too much though there is bargaining power. Certainly with the transportation hub that is there is lot so of social issues up here, that and the federally funded hospital keep lots of transients through town. I can't am going a bit stir crazy this winter but may revise that later on this spring. PM me if you want to know more.
Cheers,
